Correlation Between Arteriosclerosis And Leukoaraiosis In Chinese Hospitalized Subjects

Background: leukoriaosis(LA)is associated with development of various diseases such as symptomatic ischemic stroke and vascular dementia.Arteriosclerosis is a potential risk factor for LA.Pulse wave velocity(PWV)is the gold standard for evaluating systemic large and medium arteriosclerosis.ABI is another indicator of arteriosclerosis detection for predicting cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events.Studies have shown that arteriosclerosis indicators: PWV is a potential risk factor for LA.Objective: To investigate the correlation between two indicators of arteriosclerosis like baPWV and ABI,with LA.The ultimate goal is to find a new simple and efficient laboratory marker for the diagnosis of LA.Methods: This study included 110 hospitalized patients,including non-LA group,mild LA,moderate LA,severe LA:19 cases,45 cases,23 cases,23 cases.Univariate analysis and multi-factor ordered logistic regression analysis were performed.According to the severity of LA,the subjects were divided into nonLA group,mild-to-moderate LA group,and severe LA group,and multiple comparisons between groups were performed.Finally,the ROC curve of the Brachy-ankle pulse wave velocity(baPWV)for the LA diagnostic test was also plotted.Results: a total of 110 hospitalized patients were enrolled in the study,including 19 in the non-LA group and 91 in the LA group(45 in mild,23 in moderate,and 23 in severe).(1)by univariate analysis: age,systolic blood pressure,homocysteine ??(HCY),endogenous creatinine clearance rate(CCr),whether to take antihypertensive drugs,bracial-ankle pulse wave velocity(baPWV)may be associated with LA.Our study did not find correlation between ABI and LA.(2)With four grades of LA as the dependent variable,orderly logistic regression was performed with several factors such as baPWV as the independent variable.The results showed that age,systolic blood pressure,and baPWV were independent of taking antihypertensive drugs,triglycerides,homocysteine ??and creatinine clearance and so on.(3)By comparing the two-to-two comparison between the non-LA group,the mild-to-moderate LA group,and the severe LA group,result showed that higher baPWV was associated with more severe LA.(4)We also plotted the ROC curve of the baPWV diagnostic test.When the sensitivity is 0.659,the specificity is 0.947,the best baPWV is 1694 cm/s,and the accuracy of baPWV for the diagnosis of LA is 0.809.Conclusions:(1)our study found that arteriosclerosis is associated with the occurrence and progression of leukoaraiosis.(2)baPWV may be a new marker for predicting the occurrence of leukoaraiosis and assessing the severity of leukoaraiosis.
