Objective To observe the mid-term effect of stand-alone MC-PEEK cage in patients with single segmental cervical spondylosis. Methods Rretrospective analysis of 26 patients with single-level cervical spondylosis from January 2012 to December 2012 in our hospital was carried out and divided into two groups: experimental group(n = 12)and control group(n = 14),in which experimental group used a stand-alone MC-PEEK cage as the observation group.Control group was treated with traditional cervical interbody fusion cage combined with anterior plate as control group. Before operation,3 days after operation,1 year after operation,3 years after operation,5 years after operation, the patients in both groups underwent X-ray examination of the anterior and lateral position of cervical spine, and the JOA score was determined according to the clinical symptoms and signs of the patients. The improvement of nervous system function before and after operation(using JOA score),the changes of anterior and posterior edge height(HAB,HPB),cervical curvature of cervical spondylosis(D value,Cobb angle)and the degeneration of adjacent vertebrae(Kellgren X-ray grading criteria for cervical degeneration)were analyzed statistically. Results The neurological function JOA scores of two groups of patients at different time points after operation were significantly improved compared with those before operation(P < 0.05).There was no significant difference in JOA score between the two groups at the same time points after operation(P > 0.05).The recovery of cervical intervertebral space height(HAB,HPB)and cervical physiological curvature(D value,Cobb angle)in AB group were significantly improved compared with those before operation(P < 0.05).At the last follow-up,the height and physiological curvature of cervical fusion segment were slightly lost in both groups, but there was no significant difference in the recovery of cervical intervertebral space height and physiological curvature between two groups at the same time points(P > 0.05).At the last follow-up,there were 2 cases of adjacent segment degeneration in experimental group, the incidence of adjacent vertebral degeneration in experimental group was 9.09%.There were 5 cases of adjacent segment degeneration in control group, the incidence of degeneration near vertebral body was 22.73%.There was no significant difference between the two groups(P > 0.05).Conclusions 1.The application of stand-alone MC-PEEK cage is simple, short time, less bleeding, less injury to surrounding tissues, and reduces the complications associated with internal fixation.2.The stand-alone MC-PEEK cage can obtain satisfactory cervical intervertebral fusion at the early stage, and can effectively restore the nervous system function in the middle stage, and maintain the cervical spine physiological curvature and the height of cervical intervertebral space. There was no statistical difference between self-stable cervical interbody fusion cage and anterior titanium plate combined with traditional cervical interbody fusion cage.3.The incidence of near vertebral degeneration of stand-alone MC-PEEK cage was significantly lower than that of anterior cervical titanium plate combined with traditional interbody fusion cage.4.Stand-alone MC-PEEK cage is one of the better fusion procedures for the treatment of single cervical spondylosis.single segment cervical spondylosis.
