AimsTo investigate potential risk factors for liver-related mortality in PBC patients.MethodsThe data of all PBC patients were collected from the database of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, which contained 670 PBC inpatients between 2011 and 2016.Potential risk factors were included for evaluation, and odds ratios(ORs)and 95% CIs were analyzed using univariate(unadjusted OR,UOR)and multivariate(adjusted OR,AOR)conditional logistic regressions.ResultsBased on the data of 58 liver-related deceased PBC cases and 562 living controls between 2011 and 2016,we found that 54 PBC patients died of decompensated cirrhosis and the others died of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).The most common immediate cause was hemorrhagic shock(25),followed by hepatic encephalopathy(22).Other direct causes of death causes were septic shock(5),hepatorenal syndrome(3),and respiratory failure(3).Age > 54 years old, male gender, hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),diabetes mellitus and non-response to UDCA were all independent risk factors for liver-related mortality in PBC patients(P < 0.05).Conclusion1.This study indicated that PBC patients with age > 54 years old, male gender, hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),diabetes mellitus and non-response to UDCA are more likely to have a higher risk of liver-related death.2.Most PBC patients died of decompensated cirrhosis and the most common immediate cause was hemorrhagic shock, followed by hepatic encephalopathy.3.Good-response to UDCA is a protective factor for liver-related mortality in PBC patients, and can reduce the risk of death in those patients.
