Objective:To investigate the correlation of discoid lateral meniscun on knee joint cartilage degeneration with age.and the distribution and grade characteistics of discoid lateral meniscun on knee joint cartilage degeneration Methods: A consecutive series of patients with discoid lateral meniscus(DLM)who were treated in the Department of Orthopedics Sports Trauma and Arthroscopic Surgery,First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University between 2011 to 2016 and were evaluated for the presence of acomplete lateral discoid meniscus in MRI constituted the basis of this study.According to wheather has the knee joint cartilage degeneration or not,all patients were divide into two groups.T-test analysis was used to examine the difference of knee joint cartilage degeneration between two groups.According to the Outbridge classification system, analyze the injuries portion and degree of knee joint cartilage degeneration.Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the correlation between age and the degree of knee joint cartilage degeneration. Results: According to the Outbridge classification system of 123 patients,68 patients(55.28%)were diagnosed with knee joint cartilage degeneration and 55 patients(44.72%)were not found knee joint cartilage degeneration. The mean ± SD age of knee joint cartilage degeneration group was 31.34±15.26 years and The mean ± SD age of none knee joint cartilage degeneration group was 17.87±8.20 years. The age of knee joint cartilage degeneration group was significant higher than the age of none knee joint cartilage degeneration group,P<0.01.According to the Outbridge classification system of 68 patients who were diagnosed with knee joint cartilage degeneration, the gradeⅠwas 89(41.59%),the gradeⅡwas 56(26.17%),the grade Ⅲ was 50(23.36%),the grade Ⅳwas 19(8.88%).There are 214 injuries of 68 patients who were diagnosed with knee joint cartilage degeneration. There are 51 injuries in patella of the retropatellar articular surface and 18 injuries in femoral trochlea. There are 16 injuries in medial femoral condylus and 60 injuries inlateral femoral condyle. There are 6 injuries in tibial medial plateau and 63 injuries lateral tibial plateau. The injuries in lateral cartilage are significant higher than the injuries in tibial cartilage.Analyzing the correlation between age and the highest level of knee joint cartilage degeneration,we found that the age was significantly correlated with the highest level of knee joint cartilage degeneration(r=0.872,P=0.000<0.01).Conclusion: Age was a risk factor for degenerative changes on discoid lateral meniscun patient’s knee joint cartilage. The injuries in lateral cartilage are significant higher than the injuries in tibial cartilage.the age was significantly correlated with the highest level of knee joint cartilage degeneration.
