Objective: To investigate the correlation between the expression of Hes1 and Slug in invasive breast cancer and its clinical significance. Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed the surgical operation of breast surgery in the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University from January 2013 to December 2013.All the 128 cases, invasive breast cancer with complete clinical and pathological data, were confirmed by pathology and without preoperative adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy.Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of Hes1 and Slug in 128 cases of invasive breast cancer. The correlation between them and the prognosis of breast cancer were analyzed.SPSS22.0 statistical software package were used for data analysis.Counting data were analyzed by chi-square test, correlation by Pearson correlation analysis, survival analysis by Kaplan-Meier method, and Log-ank test to compare the survival curves. Results: The positive rates of Hes1 and Slug in invasive breast cancer were 44.53% and46.88%,respectively.The positive rates of Hes1 and Slug in invasive breast cancer were73.08% and 76.92%.That is the same specimen were identified as high expression or low expression was 73.44%,in the triple negative breast cancer expression consistent rate was 76.92%.The expression of Hes1 and Slug was significantly higher in triple negative breast cancer than in other molecular types(P=0.002;P=0.001),and was significantly associated with ER negative(P=0.014;P=0.017).There was a significant positive correlation between Hes1 and Slug expression in invasive breast cancer(r=0.76,P<0.01).Hes1 and Slug expression were significantly associated with axillary lymph node metastasis(P<0.001),pTNM staging(P=0.037;P=0.029),and poor prognosis(with or without recurrence and metastasis)(P<0.001),and with patient age(P=0.535;P=0.242),tumor size(P=0.157;P=0.232),histological grade(P=0.245;P=0.531),and Her-2 gene amplification(P=0.510;P=0.422)and Ki-67(P=0.582;P=0.416)is irrelevant.Hes1 and Slug protein overexpression had no significant effect on the overall survival of patients with invasive breast cancer(P=0.061;P=0.078).However,patients with Hes1 and Slug overexpression had significantly shorter RFS time(P<0.001).Conclusion: Our results for the first time demonstrate a strong correlation between Hes1 and Slug expression in invasive breast carcinomas, suggesting that there may be a mechanism of interaction between Hes1 and Slug in the development, progression, invasion and metastasis of invasive breast cancer,Together with the progress of breast cancer. In addition,it was also found that Hes1 and Slug are highly expressed simultaneously, especially in triple-negative breast cancer.Hes1 and Slug may play an important role in the development and progression of triple-negative breast cancer, and may be useful for further study of triple negative breast cancer targeted therapy.
