Objective:This study was aimed to investigate the expression of Slug protein in the Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and to clarify the relationship between the expression of Slug protein and the depth of tumor invasion, regional lymph node metastasis, differentiation of tumor cells, the prognosis of the patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.Methods:55 cases of Esophageal Carcinoma were collected from April 2009 to March 2010 in our hospital ,and the pathology proved to be esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Immunohistochemistry was used to study the expression of Slug protein in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma tissues and normal tissues in distance for 5-7CM from tumor .The intensity of the expressions in tumor cells and normal tissues cells was analyzed by semiquantitative digital image analysis, and the relationship between their expressions and clinico-pathological parameters (the depth of tumor invasion, with or without regional lymph node metastasis of the esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, differentiation of tumor cells and the prognosis of patitens)was analyzed. Results :Among 55 specimens of the esophageal squamous cell carcinoma ,the positive expression rate of Slug protein expression was 78.2% , while all of them were negative expressed in normal esophageal epithelial tissues(the normal esophageal epithelial tissues distance for more than 5CM from tumor and proved by pathology), and their expression in carcinomatous tissues of esophagus was significantly higher than those in normal esophageal epithelial tissues ( P<0.05).The degree of Slug protein expressions was well associated with the depth of tumor invasion ( P<0.05), the invasion of the lymph nodes( P<0.01) ,the differentiation of tumor cells ( P<0.05). and was also related to relapse and/or metastasis of the tumors for one year after the radical esophagectomy(P<0.01).Conclusions:The expression of Slug protein in the esophageal carcinoma tissues may be used as indexes to judge invasion and metastasis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma .The expression of Slug protein can help to judge the prognosis of patiens with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
