Oropharyngeal cancer(OPC)is a common head and neck malignancy. In recent years, the global incidence of Human Papillomavirus(HPV)-associated OPC has increased. In addition to smoking and drinking,HPV infection is considered as another risk factor for OPC.The carcinogenicity of HPV is mainly attributable to its oncoproteins E6 and E7 being selectively retained and expressed at all stages of the carcinogenic process, leading to uncontrolled cell cycle and DNA damage. At present, there are three HPV vaccines that can be used to prevent HPV-associated OPC,and is ineffective for those who have been infected.Surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are still the main treatments for HPV-associated OPC.Minimally invasive surgery, immunotherapy, etc.are being researched and tested to improve the therapeutic effect and ameliorate the quality of patient's life after treatment. This article mainly discusses the progress of prevention and treatment based on the biological characteristics and pathogenesis of HPV-associated OPC.
