Objective“Shang Han Fa Yan” is a book by famous Qing Dynasty doctor Mai Naiqiu from Ling Nan province.The book is divided into two volumes.Volume one covers topics regarding the four theories on medical languages,which lists the detailed interpretation of shang han by famous doctors like Hua Tuo and Sun Simiao,essentials on the pathology of the six meridians,and lastly the subtopic of one of the meridians(Taiyang meridian)on summer-heat dampness and tetany.Volume two covers topics regarding the other 5 meridians,Yangming,Shaoyang,Taiyin,Shaoyin,Jueyin,heat reversal syndrome,yin and yang reversal syndrome and all cold and hot syndromes.Following the order of the original book of Treatise on Febrile Diseases,together with the knowledge of “Ling Shu” and “Su Wen” and with reference to Ke Yunbo “Collected Writings on the Renewal of the ‘Treatise on Cold Damage'”,this is Mai's interpretion of the book according to the organs and meridians chapters.Being proficient in “Ling Shu” and “Su Wen”,Mai has a unique study on Treatise on Febrile Diseases,which consist of six main academic ideas.Mai advocates the cross-referencing of classical scriptures,using the scriptures to interpret the “Treatise on Febrile Diseases”.Firstly,he emphasises on the importance of the introduction chapter of shang han,in the order of natural and inverse progression of the six meridians,starting from Taiyang and Shaoyang.Second,he highlights the differences in the Taiyang chapter and on dampness,tetany and summer heat.Third,he divided the three yin meridians into natural passage of three yin meridians syndromes and direct passage of three yin meridians syndrome.Fourth,he listed heat reversal syndrome,yin and yang reversal syndrome and all cold and hot syndrome as the three syndromes not present in the six meridians.Mai integrates “Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor” in the precise summary of the six meridians and each article of the theory of the viscera and meridians.Mai refines the interpretation of the Chinese medicine formulary and does not conform to modern conventions.This topic begins with the conceptual standardisation and construction of database of the original text of “Shang Han Fa Yan” and its syndromes,symptoms,pathogenesis,pulse,treatment method,formulary,dosage and decoction method.By utilising the sophisticated modern-day concept analysis mathematical theory and the multi-layered complex network to generate the visualisation of “Shang Han Fa Yan”,there will be a comprehensive,object and multi-level revelation on the valuable wealth of knowledge of the book,providing a modern thinking and interpretation,and inheritance of traditional Chinese medicine classics.MethodsUsing the Mai's “Shang Han Fa Yan” as a blueprint for the concept standardization and construction of the database of syndromes,symptoms,pathogenesis,pulse,treatment method,formulary,dosage and decoction methods,the contents were analysed using the mathematical theory,all while respecting and retaining the original articles and intention of the book.The original information was then used as background modus for creation and optimization,referencing the creation of the complex concept network of universality and particularity.Ultimately,the visualisation of the knowledge of “Shang Han Fa Yan” aids in the broad aspect and detailed discovery of knowledge and interpretation.ResultsOverall,through the knowledge discovery of a complex in-depth conceptual network of “Shang Han Fa Yan”,the visualisation of the relationship between syndrome differentiation of the six meridians,syndrome and treatment method differentiation and principles,methods,formulas,and medicines was accomplished.Based on the layers and branches,the relationship between Taiyang disease,Yangming disease,Shaoyang disease,Taiyin disease,Shaoyin disease,Jueyin disease,heat reversal syndrome,yin and yang reversal syndrome and all hot and cold syndrome can be easily discovered and understood.There are many ways to classify these relationships,such as the classification according to original text,syndromes,symptoms,pathogenesis,pulse,treatment method,formulary,dosage and decoction method or classification according to common principle and discovery of new common patterns that were previously hidden like the high-level bifurcation in the multi-level complex concept network.These different classifications represent the syndrome and treatment differentiation in the original text,showcasing Mai's academic ideology on principles,methods,formulas,and medicines.Mainly,by inserting the data of syndromes,symptoms,pathogenesis,pulse,treatment method,formulary,dosage and decoction method of the six meridians into a hierarchical multi-level complex concept network,the visualization of the relationship between Taiyang disease,Yangming disease,Shaoyang disease,Taiyin disease,Shaoyin disease,Jueyin disease,heat reversal syndrome,yin and yang reversal syndrome and all hot and cold syndrome can be achieved.When examining from different layers perspectives,it was discovered that Mai integrated his opinion of “Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor” while analysing “Shang Han Fa Yan”.However,when examining from different classifications perspective,Mai reclassified each topic,discovering the essence of each topic and defined the similarities and differences in patterns and cause between them.In the research aspects,via the hierarchical multi-level complex concept network as mentioned above,the visualization of the relationship between the different topics can also be achieved.When examining from different layers perspectives,it was discovered that Mai's interpretation followed Zhang Zhongjing's principles,utilising “Su Wen”'s medical theory,and explained according to the original Shang Han Lun chapters.However,when examining from different classifications perspective,it was discovered that Mai has a unique view on the syndrome and formulary of Shang Han,using the theory of viscera and meridians to explain the herbs and formulary of Shang Han,and analysing the formulary and interactions between different medicines.ConclusionWith the modernization,improved technological advances and popularizing of traditional Chinese medicine,and the inheritance of the actual situation of Ling Nan medicine's “Shang Han Fa Yan”,the integration of sophisticated mathematical theories and research of traditional classics allows the realisation of a comprehensive,objective,multi-level visualisation of “Shang Han Fa Yan” data,which is also in line with Ling Nan medicine's “Shang Han Fa Yan” research directions.Through the analysis of partial order form on “Shang Han Fa Yan” overall and detailed data,it proves the feasibility of the research method.This integration of mathematical theory and modern information into the inheritance of traditional Chinese medicine classics is an important step,which has the potential to introduce new vitality into this traditional research field.
