ObjectiveBased on the data of electronic medical records,we analyzed the clinical effects of pediatric massage as add-on therapy compared to routine therapy alone in children with diarrhea.MethodsIn this study,a retrospective study design and information extraction table were used to collect the data.We collected the electronic medical record data of children who were hospitalized in Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine from September 1,2012 to December 31,2016,who were 0-12 years old,who discharged the first or second diagnosis as diarrhea, and the relevant clinical data and curative effect index data were extracted. The electronic medical record data were separately extracted and recorded by two people and verified to form a database. We used the propensity score method to control baseline characteristic bias between the groups, and then analyzed and compared the differences of clinical effects between the two groups.ResultsA total of 324 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were collected, including 122 patients in the routine therapy plus massage group and 202 patients in the routine treatment group. After the bias of baseline characteristics was controlled by the propensity score method,84 patients were retained in the massage group and 138 in the control group. The results were as follows:a.There was no significant difference between the treatment group and the control group in the days of diarrhea, the days of hospitalization, defecation times at discharge and the defecation traits at discharge.b.According to the course of diarrhea(total diarrhea days less than or equal to 2 weeks, between 2 weeks and 2 months, and more than 2 months),the total samples were divided into three groups. When the total diarrhea days were less than 2 weeks, there was no statistical difference between the treatment group and the control group in the days of diarrhea after hospitalization, the days of hospitalization, defecation times at discharge and the defecation traits at discharge(P > 0.05).When the total diarrhea days ranged from 2 weeks to 2 months, the difference of diarrhea days between treatment group and control group was statistically significant(P < 0.05),and the diarrhea days after hospitalization in treatment group was significantly less than that in control group. The results suggest that massage therapy may be more effective than routine therapy in the treatment of persistent diarrhea. There was no significant difference in hospitalization days, defecation times at discharge and defecation traits at discharge between the two groups(P > 0.05).ConclusionBased on the above analysis results,in this study, the use of pediatric massage may have a potential therapeutic effect on children with severe diarrhea; For children with mild diarrhea, there was no significant difference in therapeutic effect of the massage as add-on therapy compared to routine therapy alone.
