Study Of Professor Liu Maocai's Train Of Thought For Diagnosis And Treatment Of Vertigo Basing On In-depth Interview

Objectives:Main objective: To summarize Professor Liu Maocai's thoughts on clinical diagnosis and treatment of vertigo and the achievements of academic thought.Secondary objective: To explore the application and operation for using qualitative research methods in the study of inheriting famous TCM doctor's experience.Methods:Documentary source method was used to collect Professor Liu's treatises and the lecture of the conference on the experience of treating vertigo,as well as the inheritors' literatures that summarizing Professor Liu's experience of treating vertigo.In depth interviewing method was used to interview Prof.Liu Mao-cai.Recordings and notes were collected during interviews.Through researchers,qualitative analysis software Atlas.ti 8,using grounded theory,combined with conceptual drawing,memo writing and other techniques data analysis was conducted for data analysis.For quality control,data triangulation built by Professor Liu Maocai's exposition,inheritors' elaboration,Professor Liu Maocai's interview data and feedback method was conducted.Results:During documentary research,243 minutes of sound and video recordings,44 periodical and Conference papers;2 monographs;8 lectures;105 inheriting notes,712 medical records,38 articles of sentiment were sorted out.Through open coding,axial coding,590 codes,27 concepts,1 category and 7 themes were formed.Among which,15 concepts,1 category and 3 themes were associated with "Professor Liu Maocai's train of thought for diagnosis and treatment of vertigo";while 12 concepts and 4 themes were related to "the achieving path of professor Liu Maocai's academic thoughts".Through selective coding,2 story lines about Professor Liu Maocai's train of thought for diagnosis and treatment of vertigo were formed,while 1 story line about the achieving path of professor Liu Maocai's academic thoughts was formed.Under the title of "Professor Liu Maocai's train of thought for diagnosis and treatment of vertigo" generated 3 themes which were the theories of etiology and pathogenesis of vertigo,syndrome differentiation and treating thoughts of vertigo and the characteristics of herbs using.The theories of etiology and pathogenesis of vertigo include "deficiency of liver,spleen and kidney being roots,wind,phlegm and blood stasis being symptoms","blood vessel theory" and "phlegm and blood stasis theory";Syndrome differentiation and treating thoughts of vertigo include "attaching importance to the differential diagnosis of western medicine","using western medical technology","stick to TCM thinking methods","etiology orientation","seeking syndrome factor when there is no evidence","take no account of fake evidence","differentiating syndrome instead of predetermining".Among them,"attaching importance to the differential diagnosis of western medicine","using western medical technology" and "stick to TCM thinking methods" were categorized to "Chinese medicine as fundamental structure,western medicine for use";The characteristics of herbs using include "gap breakthrough","treatment interaction","selecting drugs subtly","tonifying without sticking to channel tropism","combination of modern pharmacological research".Under the title of "the achieving path of professor Liu Maocai's academic thoughts" generated 4 themes which were reasons for learning medicine,individual characters,improvement in Chinese and western medicine,professionalism.Conclusion:Professor Liu Maocai's train of thought for diagnosis and treatment of vertigo was summarized and 3 themes were formed: the theories of etiology and pathogenesis of vertigo,syndrome differentiation and treating thoughts of vertigo and the characteristics of herbs using.Story lines about Professor Liu Maocai's train of thought for diagnosis and treatment of vertigo were formed.Background and foundation of Professor Liu Maocai's academic thought achievement were summarized.Story line about the achieving path of Professor Liu Maocai's academic thoughts was formed.The unstructured in-depth interview method can be used for the study of inheritance of famous TCM doctors' academic thoughts and clinical experiences.
