Pharmacognacy research and isolation of chemical constituents were performed on herb Veratrilla baillonii Franch.,as well as pharmacological study was conducted to study on the acute toxicity, gastrointestine activities and analgestic effects.Medical characters and microstructures such as vessels, crystals and starch grains were observed under the microscopy. The chemical components of water extracts(WVBF)were analyzed by systematic speration process including HPLC and UV-VIS methods.Four species of veratrilosides and two species of iridoid glucosides were identified.HE staining and 1H NMR methods were applied to investigate the lethal rate, pathological changes and content of metabolities. The results showed that the chloroform fraction of Aconitum brachypodum diel(CFA)induced lethal rates were decreased obviously by WVBF.Furthermore, the integral values of different groups were compared and showed that WVBF treatment could properly regulate the concentration alterations for some metabolites in the heart of mice with the CFA-induced toxicity.CFA treatment heart regions analyzed were metabolically altered. The test of gastric emptying function and small intestinal propulsive function were used to observe the effect of WVBF on influence of gastrointestine induced by CFA.Phenol red was used as an indication during the experient. The results showed that the WVBF could inhibit the intestinal propulsive function, while the effects was not significant in the gastric emptying function.Up-and-Down method was applied to measure LD50 of the mixture of WVBF and CFA at different proportion.LD50 was increased with the increase of proportion for WVBF in the mixture.Classical hot plate and acid-induced withing test were used to assess the agalgetic effects of WVBF with/without CFA.It showed that the effects of WVBF was not obvious while singly used but increase the agalgetic effect of CFA when used together.
