| Objective: To construct a core nursing physical assessment framework for newborns to guide nurses’ practice,and to analyze the factors influencing the neonatal nurses’ physical assessment performance in order to provide a reference to nurse managers.Methods:(1)Through literature review and individual in-depth interview,we found out current situation of nursing physical assessment skills and explored core nursing physical assessment skills.(2)Based on the results of above procedure,questionnaire named “the performing frequency and importance of nursing physical assessment skills for neonatal nurses”were developed,which included 34 nursing physical assessment skills in 8dimensions,combined with a questionnaire named “the factors influencing use of nursing physical assessment skills among neonatal nurses”.A cluster sampling method was used to recruit 750 neonatal nurses from 10 provinces.(3)Based on questionnaire survey and focus group interview,thecore nursing physical assessment framework for newborns was constructed preliminarily.Results:(1)The survey on the performing frequency of nursing physical assessment skills showed that among the investigated 34 nursing physical assessment skills,31 were categorized as high frequency,3 were categorized as moderate frequency,and none was categorized as low frequency.(2)The survey on the importance of nursing physical assessment skills showed that among the investigated 34 nursing physical assessment skills,28 were categorized as the most important,6 were categorized as moderately important and none was categorized as the least important.(3)Finally,the core physical assessment framework was constructed in 8dimensions,including 34 nursing physical assessment skills.(4)The survey on the influencing factors of use of nursing physical assessment skills showed that “It’s necessary to develop the physical assessment sheet” was agreed by 83.9% nurses.“They are well trained about nursing physical assessment skills in the department.” was agreed by 77.9% nurses.“Physical assessment skills should be done by doctors” was agreed by41.0% nurses.“They are unskilled in physical assessment skills” was agreed 39.0% nurses.“I have no time to use physical assessment skills because of heavy workload” was agreed by 37.6% nurses.Conclusion:(1)The core nursing physical assessment framework was constructed,including 34 nursing physical assessment skills in 8dimensions,which had the neonatal characteristics.It could instruct nurses to use nursing physical assessment skills and provide managers a reference.(2)The influencing factors of use of nursing physical assessment skills among neonatal nurses were insufficient recognition for nursing physical assessment skills,unskilled technique,heavy workload and lack of physical assessment tools.Raising nurses’ importance cognition of physical assessment skills,strengthening continuing education,distributing nurses reasonably and establishing physical assessment sheet would help neonatal nurses to use physical assessment skills better. |
