ObjectiveTo determine the effects of horticultural therapy on disease severity, sleep, quality of life, and social function in patients with depression disorder and to provide nursing support for its rehabilitation.MethodsConsecutive depressive patients were selected from Chongqing Mental Health Center between March, and October 2016.134 depressive patients were included in this randomized controlled clinical trial. All the patients were randomly divided into the control group and therapy group through randomized digital table. There were 67 patients in both the control and the therapy groups, separately. The control group was treated with antidepressants combined with conventional care while the therapy group received the extra horticultural therapy besides those treatments.Hamilton Depression Rating Scale(HAMD),Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI),Quality of Life Comprehensive Assessment Questionnaire(GQOLI-74),and Social Function Defect Screening Scale(SDSS)were performed to assess the improvement of disease severity, sleep, quality of life, and social function of those patients, before and after those treatments. The main statistical methods were Student t test,Chi-square analysis, and Repeated Measure ANOVA,and P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.ResultsThere was no significant difference in the scores of HAMD between the two groups before and after the end of treatment(P>0.05).At the end of the 8th week, the scores of the two groups were lower than those before treatment, and the score of the therapy group was significantly lower than that of the control group(P<0.05).It indicated that horticultural therapy had significantly improved the disease severity of depression according to the one-way repeated measures data analysis of variance(P<0.05).2.There was no significant difference in PSQI score between the therapy group and the control group(P>0.05).The PSQI score of the therapy group was lower than that of the control group at the end of 4 weeks and 8 weeks, and the score was significantly lower in the 8th week, and there was significant difference(P<0.01).The horticultural therapy had significantly improved the sleep quality of depression according to the one-way repeated measures data analysis of variance(P<0.05).3.There was no significant difference in GQOLI-74 score and overall quality score between the two groups(P>0.05).The scores and total scores of GQOLI-74 in the two groups were higher than those before the experiment(P<0.01).The difference was statistically significant(P<0.01).The horticultural therapy had improved the life quality of depression according to the one-way repeated measures data analysis of variance(P<0.05).4.There was no significant difference in the SDSS score between the two groups(P>0.05).The scores of the two groups were significantly lower than those of the control group at the 8th and 8th week before the treatment, and the difference was significant(P<0.01).The horticultural therapy had improved the social function of depression according to the one-way repeated measures data analysis of variance(P<0.05).ConclusionsThe horticultural therapy as an additional treatment besides the psychiatric routine care can significantly improve quality of sleep, quality of life, and social function of depressive disorder patients. The horticultural therapy as a new type of adjuvant therapy for patients with depression has the high value of practical application, worthy of clinical application to promote.
