Objective: To investigate the incidence of suboptimal bowel preparation before colonoscopy in outpatients and analyze the influencing factors, which might provide references for clinical nurses to take intervention for improving the quality of bowel preparation. Methods: In this study, outpatients who attended colonoscopy at the endoscopy unit of the second hospital of Hebei Medical University from July2016 to October 2016 were prospectively enrolled.Surveying the outpatients by questionnaires, which included demographics, bowel preparation relevant information and Boston bowel preparation scales(BBPS).Recording patients' age, height, weight, start time of drinking polyethylene glycol(PEG)and so on.Bowel preparation was assessed by endoscopic physicians using BBPS.Categorical variables were compared using Chi-square test.Logistic regression was evaluated to identify factors related to suboptimal bowel preparation. Results: A total of 380 outpatients were included and 65(17.1%)had suboptimal bowel preparation. In the multivariate regression analysis, drinking PEG at hospital(OR=2.447,95%CI:1.353~4.424),absence of bowel movement within 60 minutes from the start of PEG(OR=2.920,95%CI:1.533~5.562),defecation frequency after the start of PEG(<5times)(OR=2.085,95%CI:1.120~3.881),the characteristics of last stool before colonoscopy was liquid with residue(OR=10.268,95%CI:2.889~ 36.489),elapsed time after PEG consumption(>5h)(OR=3.183,95%CI:1.703~5.947)were the independent risk factors of suboptimal bowel preparation. Conclusion: On the basis of drinking polyethylene glycol(PEG)at hospital, elapsed time after PEG consumption(>5h),absence of bowel movement within 60 minutes from the start of PEG,defecation frequencyafter the start of PEG(<5times),liquid with residue of the last stool before colonoscopy, clinical nurses should be on the alert, evaluate comprehensively the bowel preparation quality and give the patients rational advice.
