Objective: This study aimed to estimate trends in prevalence of smoking in different sub-populations and evaluate the associated factors of smoking in agricultural and pastoral areas in three counties of northern Xinjiang,so as to take further measures to promote behaviors to control smoking in line with the local conditions. Methods: Individuals aged ?15 years was conducted using a stratified four-stage random sampling method in 18 villages from Hebusaier,Fuhai and Fukang in 2015.Questionnaire and physical examination were conducted in all individuals. The data were analyzed using SPSS19.0 software.Continuous variables were presented as means ± standard deviations and were analyzed using t-test.Categorical variables were expressed as proportion(%)and frequency(n),and were analyzed using the Chi-square test.As for associated factors of prevalence of current smoking, adjusted odds ratio(OR)with associated 95%confidence interval(95%CI)were calculated using multivariate logistic regression. Results: In this investigation, the overall prevalence of current smoking was 24.4%,and the prevalence in males was 47.9% and in females was 1.1%,which is higher in males than that in females. The smoking rate of with different age, ethnic, martial status, occupations and smoking behaviors were different, but the smoking rate of residents with different occupations was not different.Among the current smokers, the proportion of people who average daily smoking were 11-20 per days was the highest, accounting for56.8% of the total population;the proportion of people who smoking duration were 1-20 years was the highest, which was 69.4%;the proportion of people who started smoking at the age of 31 years and above was the highest, which was 61.6%.smoking was related to age, gender, ethnic, the degree of education, martial status, occupation and alcohol behaviors. Conclusion: Although the current smoking rate in Xinjiang agricultural and pastoral areas was lower than the national level,it is still remained at a high level.More effective tobacco control measures are needed.
