Objective:To evaluate the effectiveness of trained medical student volunteers who supported hypertensive patients self-management in community.Methods:55 samples were included from a community in Hangzhou,Zhejiang Province. All samples were randomly divided into two groups, and 31 comprised the intervention group and 24 comprised the control group. The intervention group received medical student volunteers'supports for hypertension self-management intervention based usual hypertension management:The intervention phase lasted 8 weeks,4 times in total,1-hour intervention every two weeks. The control group received 8-week usual hypertension management first, and received medical student volunteers' supports for hypertension self-management intervention based usual hypertension management from 8th week to 16th week.Assessment tools included chronic disease self-management measurement,Morisky Medication Adherence Scale, and the Short-form Chronic Disease Self-Efficacy Scales.Intervention group's data were collected 2 times:pre-and post-intervention.Control group's data were collected 3 times:before usual hypertension care, after usual hypertension care(before the following intervention),and post-intervention.SPSS 20.0 statistical software was used to perform t-test,chi-square test, rank sum test, repeat variance measurement analysis and other statistical analysis.Results:1.There were no significant differences between intervention group and control group at baseline(P>0.05);The basic data of self-management indicators showed that in the balance of self-management behaviors(include exercise, blood pressure monitoring, communication with doctors),health status, and self-efficacy of self-management indicators(P>0.05),There are differences in salt-restricted diet and medication compliance of self-management behaviors(P<0.05).2.The intervention group received 8-week medical student volunteers'supports for hypertension self-management intervention based usual hypertension management. The results showed that after intervention, the intervention group on self-management behaviors(include exercise, blood pressure monitoring,salt-restricted diet, medication compliance, communication with doctors),and health status,self-efficacy were improved than pre-intervention,and there were significant differences before and after the intervention(P<0.05).The intervention group was superior to the control group in self-management behaviors(include exercise,salt-restricted diet, medication compliance, communication with doctors),health status, and self-efficacy,and the differences was statistically significant(P<0.05).No statistical difference was detected in blood pressure monitoring(P>0.05).The results suggested medical student volunteers supported self-management of hypertensive patients can help improve their self-management behaviors, improve their health status, and help improve their self-management effectiveness. After 8 weeks of usual hypertension management, the control group had no statistically significant changes in self-management indicators(P>0.05).The results of the self-management intervention of medical student volunteers supported hypertensive patients self-management showed that the control group's self-management behavior s(include exercise,salt-restricted diet, medication compliance, communication with doctors),health status, and self-efficacy were improved(P<0.05),which verified medical student volunteers'supports for hypertensive patients to improve their self-management behaviors, health status and self-efficacy is effective once again. Conclusion:The effectiveness of medical student volunteers'supports for hypertensive patients self-management not only can improve their self-management behaviors(include exercise,salt-restricted diet, medication adherence and communication with doctors),but also can enhance their self-efficacy and improve their health status.
