The Impact Of Dexamethasone Vs. Ondansetron For The Prevention Of Postoperative Nausea And Vomiting After Follicle Puncture Technique

Objectives:To investigate the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting in transvaginal ultrasound—guided follicle puncture techniquel.And to evaluated the efficacy of dexamethasone for postoperative nausea and vomiting(PONV)compared with that of ondansetron in women undergoing follicle puncture techniquel.Methods:Three hundred twenty-one patients scheduled for elective follicle puncture techniquel were randomly allocated to three groups:Group Placebo(Group P,n=107),Group Dexamethasone(Group D,n=107)and Group Ondansetron(Group O,n=107).Propofol(1.5 mg/kg)and remifentanil(1 ?g/kg)were injected during the induction.Propofol(0.5 mg/kg)and remifentanil(0.5 ?g/kg)was added as needed during operation.Normal saline,5 mg dexamethasone or 4 mg ondansetron was administered respectively.Both the researchers and the patients were blinded to the group allocation.Plasma estradiol and chorionic gonadotropin on the day before surgery,the consumption of propofol,operation duration and the amount of oocyte retrieved were recorded.2 hand 24 h after surgery patients were asked if they had any nausea or vomiting.If they had,the time and extent of their occurrence were recorded.We also recorded if they had used any remedy.Result:Three hundred and three patients finished the study.There were no statistical differences in age,height,weight,operation duration,consumption of propofol,amount of oocyte retrieved,and preoperative hormone levels in the three groups.In 0-2 h after operation,15 patients in the placebo group had suffered PONV,while 11 cases and 13 cases in dexamethasone group and ondansetron group.In the interval of postoperative 2-24 h,the number of PONV in the above three groups were 7,6,and 3.There was no statistical difference in the time and severity of PONV in the three groups.Conclusion:Dexamethasone and ondansetron did not significantly reduce the incidence of nausea and vomiting after follicle puncture.The level of estrogen and the number of eggs retrievaled had an effect on postoperative nausea and vomiting.
