| BackgroundPsoriasis,ulcerative colitis(UC)chronic inflammatory disorder with overlapping genetic architecture.Previous studies have demonstrated an association between psoriasis and ulcerative colitis(UC).However,epidemiologic data evaluating psoriasis and risk of UC are controversial.In this study we completed a meta-analysis of observational studies to establish whether there was relationship between psoriasis and ulcerative colitis.ObjectiveTo perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies comparing the risk of ulcerative colitis in patients with psoriasis vs.non-psoriatic participants.MethodsTo identify relevant psoriasis studies that included ulcerative colitis as an outcome measure,the studies regarding the association between psoriasis and ulcerative colitis published up to Nov 2017 with English in Pubmed,Cochrane,and Embase database were independently searched by two investigators using the terms of‘ulcerative colitis'combined with the term‘psoriasis'.Two investigators independently extracted the informations about RR,HR,OR and characteristics of each study.Pooled risk ratio and95%confidence intervals(95%CI)were calculated using a random effect and generic inverse variance method.ResultsSix studies(four cohort and two case-control studies)with 134075 patients with psoriasis were identified and included in our meta-analysis.The pooled risk ratio of UC in patients with psoriasis was 1.58(95%CI:1.38-1.80).The statistical heterogeneity of this meta-analysis was I~2=29%.ConclusionsOur meta-analysis demonstrates an association between psoriasis and UC.Psoriasis may be at greater risk of developing UC than the non-psoriasis participants(RR:1.58,95%CI:1.38-1.80).Therefore patients with psoriasis should be regularly screened for inflammatory bowel disease such as UC.Early diagnosis of UC may prevent complications and greatly improve the patient's quality of life. |
