OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between cerebral white matter lesion(WML)under magnetic resonance imaging and traditional risk factors of atherosclerosis in patients with initial ischemic stroke.METHODS: This was a cross sectional study based on one hospital. We consecutively enrolled 526 patients with initial ischemic stroke.Clinical data included demographic characteristics, results of blood laboratory tests,ARWMC rating scores were used to evaluate the severity of WML and the results were further analyzed for the association between WML and traditional risk factors of atherosclerosis.RESULTS: After adjustment of other risk factors of atherosclerosis, multivariate regression showed that age, hypertension, homocysteine, triglyceride were independently associated with WML(age: ? = 0.11,95% CI0.07-0.14;hypertension: ? = 1.02,95% CI 0.15-1.88;homocysteine: ? = 0.16,95% CI 0.06-0.26;triglyceride: ? =-0.07,95% CI-0.16--0.02).CONCLUSION: Aging, hypertension, higher homocysteine, and lowertriglyceride were associated with the severity of WML in patients with initial ischemic stroke.
