Canopy thrips is a general term for thrips living in the forest canopy. It has important practical significance and research value in pest control, plant pollination, ecosystem nutrient cycling and biodiversity conservation. However, there are few reports on the species diversity of canopy thrips worldwide.Canopy thrips were collected from nonsoon forest in Xishuangbanna,Yunnan Province.Taxonomy and species diversity of thrips in this area were studied.A key to identy these adult thrips was provided.Approximately 360 thrips specimens in Canada balsam were produced, which belonged to 20 species in 18 genera under 3 families.Morphology micrographs of 15 species were provided.Four new species were described, including Urothrips probolus Lu & Wang,2019,Karnyothrips yunnanensis sp.nov.,Leeuwenia brevisetis sp.nov.and Leeuwenia reticulatus sp.nov.;Macrophthalmothrips Karny,1922 was new record genus to China;Three species were new records to China, including Macrophthalmothrips spiendidus Ananthakrishnan,1968,Oidanothrips megacephalus(Ananthakrishnan,1969)and Machatothrips corticosus Ananthakrishnan,1972;Two species were new records to the mainland of China,Ablemothrips maxillatus Ananthakrishnan,1969,Pentagonothrips antennalis Haga&Okajima,1979;Two species are new record to Yunnan Province,Aroidothrips longistylus Ananthakrishnan,1960 and Meiothrips menoni Ananthakrishnan,1964.The male of Macrophthalmothrips spiendidus was found for the first time. The results enriched thrips resources of Xishuangbanna. The results of species diversity analysis indicated that the richest family of canopy thrips in Xishuangbanna was Phlaeothripidae, which recorded 18 species;the remaining two families were Aeolothripidae and Thripidae with 1 species respectively.Three thrips species were abundant,Stephanothrips occidentalis,Adraneothrips chinensis and Haplothrips sp.,accounting for 40.3% of the total thrips individuals. The results of geographical fauna analysis indicated that the genus in monsoon forest canopies of Xishuangbanna were mainly distributed in Palearctic-oriental region, the species were mainly distributed in Oriental Region and South China Region.Mymarothrips garuda was listed as the only thrips spepcies in the lists by the State Forestry, that named " the List of Terrestrial Wildlife with Important Ecological,Scientific and Social Values, and the lists of local key protected wild animals".This species was collected in the canopy of tropical rainforests in Xishuangbanna.Xishuangbanna monsoon rainforest has great significance for thrips diversity conservation.
