Phyllostachys violascens is a kind of bamboos for edible shoot production. The technique of organic material mulching is named as one of the Ten Optimized Production Modes in Zhejiang province. When the technique is adopted, the bamboo shoots could be harvested earlier and farmer could get more economic profit from bamboo plantation.Since soil permeability reduced with the mulching, soil aeration deficiency influenced the bamboo rhizome growth and resulted in the bamboo degradation and yield decline.Accordingly, this study aimed to increase soil oxygen content using the buried pipe aeration system and revealed the effect of soil oxygen on the bamboo growth. The expected results could provide effective measures for the sustainable bamboo production. The obtained results were listed as following.?1?Soil oxygen in various treatments?Mulching without aeration,M;Mulching with aeration,MA;Without mulching but with aeration,A;Without mulching or aeration,CK?was measured by in situ determination. The mulching method could result in low oxygen stress on the bamboo rhizome and root. The buried pipe aeration system increased soil oxygen significantly. At the soil depth of 40 cm without mulching, soil oxygen concentration increased 2.20-5.25%?P<0.05??relative as 10.50-21.00%?compared without aeration. At the soil profile, the aeration increased soil oxygen concentration by0.78-4.98%in various soil layers?P<0.05?.In the mulching treatment, the aeration increased soil oxygen by 1.26-4.71%?P<0.05?.When there was soil moisture saturation, the aeration method could increase soil oxygen concentration by 0.69-7.58%?P<0.05?.?2?The field experiment showed that the aeration improved the bamboo root activity. In October, the bamboo root activity increased by 137.10%?P<0.05?in MA than in CK.In July, the highest photosynthesis rate, the highest stomatal conductance and the lowest intercellular CO2 concentration were observed in MA.According to the contents of antioxidant enzyme activity, soluble protein and soluble sugar in bamboo roots and leaves, the aeration showed a significant effect on the bamboo against aging as MA>A>CK>M.The aeration decreased sufficiently malondialdehyde in roots and leaves.?3?Moreover,the aeration improved soil catalase, urease, phosphatase activities those were the highest in MA at all stages?P<0.05?.According to the results, the buried pipe aeration system could increase soil oxygen concentration effectively, improve the growth of bamboo roots and leaves, and be benefit to the soil enzyme activity.Such a method has practical value and merits further development.
