The male flowers of Handeliodendron bodinievri have pistils, but their pistils don't have the fertility. The main materials of this study were buds and pistils of male flowers in different periods. And the controlled study used buds and pistils of female flowers in different periods. This study observed the change trend of morphological features of buds and pistils, and tested physiological and biochemical indexes of buds and pistils, for example relative electric conductivity,MDA content,SOD activity,POD activity,CAT activity, soluble protein content, soluble sugar content, and initial moisture content. Then, this study analysed the variation trend and correlation of morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics. The results showed that:1.When the pistils of male flowers were abortive, the average length and diameter of buds were 4.43 mm(S=0.18)and 2.49 mm(S=0.13)respectively,being less than pistils of female flowers. The ovarys of male flowers were smaller than ovarys of female flowers in the same period, and hardly expanded after abortion.More over, the ovules of male flowers were fairly young, but losed cellular structure and function.2.In the process of female sterility of male flowers, relative electric conductivity and initial moisture content rose to the maximum, soluble protein content and soluble sugar content reduced to the minimum,MDA content were decreasing, but SOD activity,POD activity,CAT activitywere increasing. And,antioxidant enzymes(among SOD,POD,CAT)activity were lower than female buds in the same periods.Meanwhile,in the male pistils, the relative electric conductivity and MDA content rose to the maximum, but soluble protein content and soluble sugar content reduced to the minimum,POD activity was on the rose.3.The reasons of female infertility of male flowers may be in relation to the low level of antioxidant enzymes(SOD,POD,CAT)activity. The cell membrane may be adversely affected by hazardous substances, for example free radicals, hydrogen peroxide and MDA.Its permeability is weakened, causing the turnover of soluble protein, soluble sugar, and electrolyte. Then, the structure and function of ovule cells are destroyed. So,the abortion of male floweris is not only in relation to the male pistils, but also influenced by the morphological growth and physiological metabolism of male buds.
