Non-head Chinese cabbage(Brassica campestris L.ssp.chinensis(L.)Makino var.communis Tsen et Lee.)is one of the most important vegetable in China.'Xiuhuajin' is a traditional local variety in Nanxun area,Huzhou.It is very popular with locals,and aslo with the consumers in Jiaxing,Suzhou,Shanghai,etc.In this paper,two types of 'Xiuhuajin'("Baizhong" and "Huangzhong")were used to analyze the growth dynamics,reproductive characteristics and their quality composition,with the local non-head Chinese cabbage variety'Hangzhou Youdonger'as control.The results provided the theory foundation for'Xiuhuajin'standardized cultivation.The main results are as follows:1.The appearance of 'Xiuhuajin' has characteristics of both head Chinese cabbage(i.e.large leaves,ruffled leaf mask and softness)and common Chinese cabbage(i.e.obvious petiole).In this study,the same growth dynamic was found between "Baizhong" and"Huangzhong",i.e."slow-fast-slow" growth rule,as well as the common non-head Chinese cabbage varieties.The plant height and maximum leaf size decreased gradually on the late growth period.The amount of growth in "Baizhong" was greater than that of "Huangzhong",especially in the number of leaves,the petiole length of the largest leaf and the fresh weight.2.On the sowing period,with the delay of sowing time,days from sowing to bud emergence,bolting,first flower and the time from the first flower to the final flower was shortened gradually,and the plant height and leaf number were reduced gradually.The seed yields were different between "Baizhong" and "Huangzhong".The mass of 1000 grains in"Baizhong" is 0.94g,and the best seeding time is on September 10.The mass of 1000 grains in "Huangzhong" is 1.27g,and the optimum seeding time is from September 10 to October 10.3.The soluble protein content of two kinds of 'Xiuhuajin' and "Hangzhou Youdonger"plants fluctuated slightly after transplanting.Among them,the soluble protein content of"Huangzhong"was the highest,while the soluble protein content of "Baizhong" was relatively low,but fluctuated greatly during the growing period.The soluble sugar content increased with grown the plant.The soluble sugar content of "Huangzhong" was the highest,and the no significant difference was found between "Baizhong" and "Hangzhou Youdonger",but the soluble sugar content of "Hangzhou Youdonger" increased rapidly after 80 days of transplanting,and the soluble stugar content of "Hangzhou Youdonger" was higher than that of "Huangzhong" after 100 days of transplanting.The crude fiber content of the three varieties showed a similer trend after transplanting.Among them,the crude fiber content of "Hangzhou Youdonger" was relatively high,while the crude fiber content of "Baizhong" was relatively low.4.The amino acid was showed that 17 kinds of amino acid and 2 kinds of basic amino acids(?-amino butyric acid and NH3)were detected among the three varieties of Chinese cabbage.The content of total amino acids of "Baizhong" was higher than that of"Huangzhong",and the total amino acids content of two kinds of'Xiuhuajin' were much higher than that of "Hangzhou Youdonger",but the ratios of seven essential amino acids content to the total amino acids content of the three varieties was quite similar(37.06%?37.87%).5.Forty-two kinds of volatile compounds were detected in the three varieties of Chinese cabbage by GC-MS,including aldehyde,ketone,alcohol,ester,nitrile,oxime,acid,heterocyclic,hydrocarbon,amide and halogenated compounds.All the three varieties contained 9 aromatic substances,including 2,4-heptadienal(E,E),nonaldehyde,trans--ionone,2,2,6-trimethylcyclohexanone,3-(methyl sulfide)propionitrile,methoxybenzooxime,7-(2-furanyl)methyl heptanate,2-n-octyl furan,1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5-[(phenyl methyl)sulfonyl]-1h-1,2,3,4-tetrazole.Three components were detected in "Baizhong" and "Huangzhong" including 2,6,6-trimethyl-l-cyclohexene-1-acetaldehyde,2-bromomethyl-isopropyl-3-methyl-cyclopentane and glutaric acid,4-methoxyphenylbutyl ester,but was not detected "Hangzhou Youdonger".
