Studies On The Cultivation Physiology And Flowering Biological Characteristics Of Two Fragrant Hosta Resources

Hosta plantaginea,a perennial plant which belongs to liliaceae family,has white,l arge and aromatic flowers.It can be widely used in the gardens of Beijing.In recent ye ars,some aromatic Hosta varieties had also been introduced to Beijing Botanical Garden which basically are the hybrid off spring of H.plantaginea.In order to know the diffe rences between the H.plantginea and it's hybrid off spring in cultivation physiology an d flowering characteristics,the experiment materials of H.plantaginea and H.'Frozen Ma rgarita',a horticultural variety,were used to study the seeding technique,fertilization rule,resistance(tolerance of shade,drought tolerance)and biological characteristics of flowe ring to provide technical guidance for the application of gardening cultivation.(1)The seed of H.plantaginea is insensitive to light in the process of germinationan d the optimum temperature of germination is 25°C.(2)Both H.plantaginea and H.'Frozen Margarita' are shade tolerant plant.Howerer t he different light levels have different influences on the growth of Hosta plant.H.plant aginea is more negative tolerant and more sensitive to light than H.'Frozen Margarita'.(3)Analysis of the growth of Hosta by NPK ratio: when the ratio of NPK is 10-30-20,the vegetative growth and reproductive growth of the two kinds of Hosta are pro moted.(4)Analysis on therequirement ofmoisture of two kinds of Hosta: The growth of t wo kinds of Hosta are promoted under proper drought.The relative water content of s oil which is suitable for the growth of the two kinds of Hosta is 50-60% and too low or too high of it would inhibit the growth of the two kinds of Hosta.H.plantgiea wa s more resist drought than H.'Frozen Margarita'.Besides,H.'Frozen Margarita' have mor e water and moisture resistance than H.plantaginea.(5)The flowering physiological characteristics of two kinds of hairpin was analyzed:the flowering period of H.plantaginea is from mid-August to mid-September and the fl owering period of H.'Frozen Margarita' is from mid-July to mid-late August,respectively.The pollen activity of H.plantaginea is strong and the pollen germination rate is abou t 80-90%.However,the pollen of H.'Frozen Margarita' has no vitality.The time of the single flower of the two kinds of Hostawere both about 24 h.The opening time of H.plantaginea is about 8 o'clock at night but the other is about 7 o'clock in the morning.The low temperature is beneficial to prolong the pollen life of H.plantaginea.
