Since joining the WTO,China's foreign trade has developed rapidly, and it has gradually become the largest country in the world in goods trade. On the one hand, the huge energy consumption provides the power support for the economic and trade development. On the other hand, the energy problems such as the contradiction between energy supply and demand, the unreasonable energy consumption structure, the low level of energy efficiency and so on have in turn become the main factors restricting the further development of the economy and trade. Therefore,it is of theoretical and practical significance to study the influence mechanism of foreign trade opening on the growth of energy consumption. This paper uses data of 285 cities at and above the prefecture level in China from 2006 to 2015,and the growth of energy consumption is decomposed into scale, technique and composition effects by means of decomposition analysis. The results show that the scale effect is the main reason to promote the increase of energy consumption on the whole, while the technique and composition effects are shown to restrain the energy consumption growth. However, there are differences in the direction and magnitude of the three decomposition effects on the growth of energy consumption among different cities.Secondly, based on the decomposition results, the 2SLS method is used to estimate the impact of trade openness on energy consumption growth and its three decomposition effects. The results show that in 2006-2015,the opening of foreign trade has a positive correlation with energy consumption growth, mainly through positive scale effects and negative technique effects.Although it's negatively correlated with composition effect, the results were not significant. Finally, based on the above results this paper puts forward the corresponding policy recommendations.
