The planning of events in contemporary cities refers to the realization of a comprehensive urban development goal including urban marketing, branding or promotion by organizing urban events, activities or “festivals” of a certain scale and publicness. In today's urban context, the concept of event planning has long been extended to a growing number of more diversified urban activities. These carefully organized activities,or the “events” as referred in this paper, refer to the characteristics of a city scale, limited sphere and temporariness compared with the above-mentioned international mega events;and more importantly, these events that point to the city's own development and marketing tend to be held in those existing, built urban public spaces. That is to say,“(big)event planning” is a common "content" in contemporary urban space, and also a “new” form of urban space. Therefore, contemporary event planning has gradually become an important part of the discussion of urban public space issues.Different from most of the discussion on urban events, this paper focuses on the negative impact of contemporary event planning in cities,in view of the relative lack of domestic event planning research in this aspect.More specifically, this paper attempts to explore the negative effects of event planning from the perspective of urban space. This paper establishes a framework for understanding the negative influences of event planning from the perspective of urban space by reviewing the relevant theories of Western scholars in this topic, and systematically summarizes multiple complex negative impacts and their corresponding event cases. This paper expounds the negative effects of event planning on various dimensions and levels of urban space in various forms, from social, cultural, management, and landscape, and the subsequent problems arising from the impact of urban space.Through a systematic review of relevant Western research, this paper explores the risks, adverse consequences, and their subsequent revelations and implications of the complex relationship between users(people),events("content"),and urban space(physical entities)in the planning and utilization of urban space.
