The social, economic, industrial and cultural growth of any country depends heavily on its transportation system. One of the modern ways that could give maximum service to all is transportation by highways.Development of infrastructures like highways, railways, and other structures in recent past years has resulted in scarcity of good quality of land for construction projects.Highway embankments and subgrades must be stable during construction and perform throughout the design life of the pavement. The subgrade during construction must be sufficiently stable to prevent rutting, pushing and shoving.Often, the subgrade is the weakest member of the pavement structure and is an important factor influencing pavement performance. The subgrade must also provide a sound platform so that the various pavement layers can be effectively and efficiently placed and compacted. Moreover, quality embankment construction is also a key factor that is required to maintain smooth-riding pavements and to provide slope stability.Proper selection of soil, adequate moisture control, and uniform compaction are required for a quality embankment.Problems resulting from poor embankment construction have occasionally resulted in slope stability problems that encroach on private property and damage drainage structures. In addition, pavement roughness can result from non-uniform support.Construction with soil is one of the most complicated procedures in engineering. It is also widely recognized that certain soils are much more suitable for some construction activities than others are.A general understanding of soil and its different properties is essential for building a quality embankment. In order to build a quality embankment, the specific properties of the soil being used must be understood to make proper field judgments.Based on the above issues, this thesis “SUBGRADE BEARING CAPACITY AND EMBANKMENT SLOPE STABILITY” was carried out and aims to:1.Firstly,provide a summary of the main factors of highway pavement design namely empirical methods, followed by a presentation of the concerned project.2.Secondly,this thesis introduces subgrade design considerations of Quhuang Highway project located in Hebei province in the northern east of people republic of China and natural conditions of the in-situ subgrade at two different sections are given. The data collected at the implementation phase of the project have been thoroughly processed and analyzed.3.Then,the numerical simulation analysis was performed by Finite ElementMethod(FEM)using numerical simulation software ABAQUS.4.Finally,the numerical simulation results has been analyzed. The research shows that the embankment settlement and slope stability are sensitives to effect of some important factors such as the subgrade properties, the geometry of the embankment, and the construction.
