In the process of continuous opening and closing of relays,there will be random arcs between contacts,which will deteriorate the working environment of relay contacts,destroy the original structure and electrical performance of contact surface,and seriously affect the safety and reliability of relays.Such relays in electrical systems are likely to cause electrical equipment failure and even catastrophic consequences such as fires.Therefore,it is necessary to conduct experimental research on the characteristics of the relay arc.In this paper,a relay arc characteristic experiment system is developed for AC magnetic holding relay and DC bridge relay.The system mainly includes mechanical structure design,electrical part design,contact clearance control part,contact breaking speed control part,gas environment control part,signal acquisition part design and upper computer part design.The experimental system for arc characteristics of relay designed in this paper can be used to test arc characteristics under AC and DC conditions;different power factor loads can be formed by switching different resistors and inductors;the influence of contact segment and closing distance on arc characteristics can be studied by controlling contact clearance;The effect of the gas environment on the DC arc can be studied by adjusting the gas environment in which the DC arc occurs.the influence of breaking and closing speed on arc characteristics can be studied by controlling the breaking and closing speed of contacts,and the influence of contact material and size on arc characteristics can be studied by changing the material and size of the contact.In order to verify the performance of the experimental device,a series of experiments on arc characteristics of relays were carried out under the experimental conditions of arc gap length,power factor,breaking closing speed,gas environment,contact material and size.The experimental results show that the developed experimental system can meet the experimental requirements of relay arc characteristics.Through the analysis of the experimental results,the arc generation law and the relay performance optimization method are obtained.
