Monticello is the former residence of Thomas Jefferson,the third president of the United States,was designed and built by Jefferson himself.In 1987,Monticello and the nearby University of Virginia were jointly designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.As the national historical landmark in the United States and the representative work of architect Jefferson,Monticello enjoys a very high position in American history and architectural history.Its architectural style and architectural thought have a deep influence on the formation and development of American architecture later.Based on the important value of Monticello in architectural creation,this paper studies its architectural design and modernization,to explore the dual value of material civilization and spiritual civilization of this building,and to analyze the implicit architectural creation techniques and creative ideas.To obtain the experience that can be used for practical study and reference of modern architecture creation in our country.In this paper,the research on the former residence architecture will be related to the various aspects of the architecture.It includes the social factors and humanistic factors,the layout,function,decoration and modern features of the architecture.This paper consists of five chapters,divided into three parts.The first part(the first chapter)is the introduction,which explains the background and purpose of the research,the related concepts,the present situation at home and abroad,the research methods and framework,and so on.The second part(from chapter two to chapter four)interprets the architectural design and modernization of Monticello.The second chapterintroduces the background of American architecture,the architectural career of designer Thomas Jefferson and the capital construction and protection process of Monticello.The third chapter makes a comparative study on the specific design and construction of Monticello in the process of initial construction and reconstruction,and interprets the architectural features and creative techniques from it.The fourth chapter analyzes the concrete expression of Monticello modernization,from the rational level and the cultural(aesthetic)level respectively.The third part(Chapter five)as the conclusion chapter,summarizes the modernization of Monticello,then analyzes the subsequent influence of Monticello,and then abstracts the enlightenment of Monticello to the creation of modern architecture in our country.Through the literature analysis and field investigation of Monticello,we can go deep into the whole process of the design,construction and development of this World Cultural Heritage house.To learn the creative techniques contained in it,and to make an in-depth exploration to the special values contained in its architectural concept,such as the creation of American-style regionalism,Absorbing advanced construction technology and improving the innovation of creation and the principle of people-oriented pragmatism,and so on,then reflects on how to develop regional and modern architecture as a whole in contemporary Chinese architectural creation.
