After the industrial revolution, the rapid popularization of cars in the Western world has caused the rapid development of roads in many Western cities, especially the United States.Road facilities, parking lots, etc.have been built in large numbers, and many cities in the United States have become cities built on cars. This road design method has greatly influenced the development of Chinese urban roads.Convenient roads do bring many conveniences and economic benefits to people, but their excessive development brings more and more urban problems, which are very acute and prominent under the increasing urban population.Based on this background, this paper seeks to establish a framework to evaluate the road space, that is,how road space respond to motor vehicles and pedestrians, and find out the spatial reasons behind the outcomes of the road space evaluation for improving it.From this perspective, the standard examines the current urban road design from two scopes. In this study, twelve main roads in the transition zone between the new and old urban areas of Hefei City were selected as the research area, which was divided into thirty-nine parts, and the actual roads were engaged using the PS-PL survey method, including counting volume of motor vehicles within a certain period of time and the number of pedestrian activities within a selected period of time, etc.Research was conducted through on-site measurement and behavior observation, after which the obtained data is processed and analyzed to obtain specific scores of road space vitality and efficiency.Through the scoring graphs of the spatial vitality and traffic efficiency of different road sections,it can be clearly seen that the spatial effect performance of different road sections.By screening and analyzing all the spatial elements of the selected road, and drawing on the idea of weighted average and limit,to formulate a quantization standard for each spatial element. From which a quantization table of the spatial elements of each road can be obtained. In order to find the potential relationship between spatial elements and spatial effect evaluation for determining the degree of correlation, this article uses SPSS analysis software and import all spatial performance scores and spatial element quantization values as dependent variables and independent variables into SPSS for binary correlation Analysis,to obtain the spatial elements most relevant to different types of roads and their spatial performance, and ultimately finding out the spatial elements that have an effect on improving bothspatial vitality and traffic efficiency are interface opening rate, pedestrian walking connectivity, buffer space and road Greening rate.Using the obtained correlation table of spatial elements and spatial effects, this paper extracts several types of spatial elements that are most relevant to their effect scores on each road for comprehensively considering and formulating principles of spatial optimization and improvement. And designing layouts, sections, space nodes and road intersections to guide the spatial optimization of other roads. This study uses the perspective of efficiency and vitality to not only find the road sections to be optimized within the scope of this study, but also to extract the principles and provide a framework for road space effect research in another city which is significant to its extend.
