Satellite-based ADS-B is a new generation of surveillance technology in the field of civil aviation. It installs high-sensitivity receivers on low-orbit satellites to achieve reliable real-time surveillance of aircraft in the world. The operating frequency of the satellite-based ADS-B system is 1090MHz.Because of this frequency is shared by most aeronautical communication systems,co-channel interference exists in the satellite-based system. And this will limit the application of satellite-based ADS-B system in the field of civil aviation. Therefore,it is of great significance to carry out simulation study on surveillance performance of satellite-based ADS-B system. The main work of this paper is as follows:First,in order to reveal the impact of co-channel interference within satellite-based ADS-B system on system surveillance performance,a method for simulation study of satellite-based ADS-B surveillance performance based on network simulation software is proposed. To begin with, the system model is given. Then the correct reception probability of ADS-B message, the update interval of aircraft position message and the update interval of aircraft position report are theoretically derived.Based on these equations, the surveillance capacity of the system is given. Finally, the satellite-based ADS-B simulation system is constructed by using Space Network Simulation(SNS)software. And simulation results verify the correctness of the theoretical results. Our study shows that the surveillance capacity of satellite-based system mainly depends on the symbol error rate(SER)of aircraft-satellite link, the SER of satellite-ground link, the position report update interval required by the ADS-B application subsystem and the number of satellites.Reducing the SER of aircraft-satellite link can significantly improve the surveillance capacity of the system.Second,in order to evaluate the surveillance performance of the satellite-based ADS-B receiver,a method is proposed to obtain the space-time distribution characteristics of global aircraft based on the real ADS-B report.First of all,the ADS-B report containing global aircraft distribution information is decoded to obtain the space-time distribution of the aircraft, and then the actual number of aircraft in the satellite coverage area is analyzed. The study shows that most of the global aircraft are distributed in the 30~o to 60~o north latitude. The number of aircraft in Europe and North America is relatively large. The single-channel ADS-B receiver cannot meet the surveillance needs in the area with high aircraft density.
