| A series of research has been carried out on a commercial B12 engine, independently developed by a automobile manufacturer, with an aim to reduce its fuel consumption and improve the power output. While the lubrication system of the engine has significant influence on its longevity, performance and fuel consumption, little information is available of the optimization of the lubrication system of an engine. This thesis, therefore, assesses the lubrication system of a commercial B12 engine based on systems engineering. The process for developing the engine lubrication system was established by analyzing its configuration, function, key components and processes under the direction of the Global Powertrain Development Plan.A one-dimensional numerical model of the lubrication system was established using a commercial software~@Flowmaster,which allows for simulation of key components, thus determining the critical parameters of the system. The simulated results were then compared and validated with experimental results. Finally,a methodology was developed to optimize the design of the lubrications system. The optimization was in turn validated by the simulated results, which suggest an optimum performance of the engine. |
