Having broken city boundaries due to commercial development,Guangxiang is a mixed settlement of commerce and residence formed from bottom up in ancient Chinese traditional cities, endowed with convenient land and water transportation near the gate outside the wall of city.Because of its special geographical location in half-urban and halfrural area, frequent commercial trades and gathering of people all over the world,it has multiple and inclusive spatial characteristics with enduring vitality.Along with the prosperity of commerce in Guangxiang, the functional difference between "city" represented by inner city and "town" represented by Guangxiang appeared in most administrated areas. So Guangxiang is an important factor to study the evolution of ancient urban morphology and economic activities. However, most current researches have limitedly focused on areas within the wall of city, which means a lack of the characteristics and value of Guangxiang. As a result, the conservation of Guangxiang seems ordinary. Therefore, aiming at a lack of researches on Guangxiang, this thesis elaborately illustrates the connotation, historical evolution, types, characteristics and diverse morphology of Guangxiang. And also, taking the four Guangxiangs in Jingzhou as an example,it explains spatial characteristic as well as protection strategies in detail, providing a new reference of idea and method for the protection of the historical areas. The core content of this study is divided into four parts:Part one is to summary the types and connotation of the Guangxiang. It has not explained the definition and components of Guangxiang, analyzing its timeline from appearing, thriving to ebbing, but it also includes the three types of Guangxiang and inner city,as well as their characteristics, that I have summarized from the perspective of space.Part two is about multiple morphology of Guangxiang. From the different perspectives including space, economy and society,a multi-city sample is selected to systematically interpret the multi-structure spatial form,multi-line economic form and multi-power social form,so as to explore such unique spatial type systematically.Part three includes research on historical form of ancient Jingzhou case.Because Guangxiang in Jingzhou is a collection of different types, this thesis makes in-depth analysis of something unique in each one, including how ancient city, environment and transportation have shaped the morphology of Guangxiang in regional scale, and how the economic and social factors have shaped the four compartments with different spatial characteristics. In part four, protection strategies targeted to Guangxiang are discussed. On the basis of previous research, the thesis step further into Guangxiang in Jingzhou. No longer willing to see individual protection confined to superficial space and protection like a patterned story, this paper proposes the protection strategies to activate historic area in Jingzhou from the perspectives of both region-related clustered protection and characteristic protection with different forms, meanwhile providing a valuable reference for protection of the historical areas.
