With the development and progress of building materials and structural technology, the traditional vernacular architecture with wood structure as the main structure began to die out rapidly. In the middle of the 20 th century,China began to wake up to the protection consciousness of traditional rural architecture, and more scholars realized the importance of the protection and inheritance of traditional rural architecture. After decades of development, the research on traditional rural architecture has formed a system, but the research results of rural architecture are mainly described and summarized, and the practice of inheritance and protection is somewhat deficient. In foreign countries,Japanese scholars started early in the study of rural architecture, and achieved good results in the theory and practice of rural architecture protection.Other countries and regions are more inclined to technical research on rural architecture. This paper takes the basis of existing research as a reference to zhejiang daitou village as the research object.First of all, daitou village has been systematically investigated to sort out the research data and establish the local traditional vernacular architecture research database.Secondly, the paper analyzes the local traditional vernacular architecture, finds out the meaning characteristics of the woodcutter, and provides new ideas for the protection of the traditional vernacular architecture. Finally, the characteristics of traditional vernacular architecture are translated into contemporary architecture to lay a theoretical foundation for the creation of contemporary architecture with traditional characteristics. In this paper, semiotic research method is used to explore the traditional vernacular architecture. It uses the semiotics to classify architectural symbols and excavates the surface structure and deep structure of architectural symbol language. The "signifier" and "signified" of architectural symbols are studied by semiotics, and the symbols are classified into three types: image symbol, indicator symbol and symbol symbol.Explore the relationship between traditional vernacular architecture and residents by using the theory of sign and application.Through data collection and investigation, daitou village traditional vernacular architecture can be mainly divided into two categories: traditional ancestral hall architecture and traditional residential architecture. This paper also studies from these two perspectives.Based on the study of semiotics, this paper firstly deconstructs and analyzes the traditional vernacular architecture, and sorts out the symbolic content of traditional ancestral hall architecture and traditional residential architecture respectively from four aspects: spatial layout, plane and facade form, large wood work and small wood work.Secondly, the symbol of the building is analyzed to find the meaning contained therein, which can be interpreted from the two aspects of symbol context and symbol function. Finally,in the relationship between traditional rural architecture and people,it can be analyzed from the perspective of users and observers.Symbols can be divided into three levels: intuitive, empirical and analytical. In the study of symbol translation strategies, contemporary ancestral halls, contemporary folk houses and traditional vernacular architecture are selected for comparison, and the translation strategies of architectural symbols are discussed. The final result of this paper is to provide a new way of thinking for the protection and inheritance of traditional vernacular architecture, which has certain guiding significance in analyzing the style characteristics of traditional vernacular architecture and studying the expression of traditional vernacular architectural elements in contemporary architecture.
