Project quality management is an important part of project management;quality management directly affects the quality and outcome of the project.In the electric power system,the relay protection is of prime importance,which requires high reliability.One typical case is the relay protection for EHV(Extra High Voltage)220kV power grid;the research on optimizing the quality management is extremely important.This paper first introduces the basic theory of project management and project quality management tools commonly used.Then,from the view point of the quality management in power system protection relay product development projects,the paper analyzes the S company's status and problems,and discusses methodology of applying the theory of quality management and quality tools to improve the quality of project management level,based on S company's current product development process.By investigating the real cases in the protection device development projects of the S company for 220 kV power system,the paper illustrates(1)how to customize the PDP(Product Development Process)development process properly based on the current situation and organizing abilities of the company;(2)how to effectively carry out product needs analysis,to ensure product requirements are transferred effectively;(3)how to identify the major design risks by the DFMEA(Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)approach;(4)how to identify the major process risk,to prevent and correct errors in advance;(5)how to solve complex and difficult problems to ensure the product quality by managing the project issues and using 8D analysis tools.
