Research In The Preservation And Upgrading Of Traditional Chinese Folk Residences In Yancheng City

Lying near the Yellow Sea,the city of Yancheng boasts a long history and has been well-known for its salt industry since the Qin Dynasty.During the Sui and Tang Dynasties,the prosperous business here made it the commercial capital of fishing,salt,metallurgy and agriculture.Therefore,it is also titled“Home to thousands of people”,Such historical background equips the land with plentiful traditional Chinese folk residences,which present the quintessence of the local cultures.Hence it is worth studying.With the acceleration of the domestic urbanization,lots of urban construction projects have launched in Yancheng City.Under this background,the preservation of the traditional buildings are strongly affected.The critical reality is calling for further efforts made on the preservation and upgrading of these architecture.Research in the traditional residences is not only relevant to the inheritance of the regional and cultural features,but is meaningful for the sustainable development of the city.This thesis takes the Yancheng traditional folk residences as object.Firstly,the author explores the cause of the style of the city through data collection,induction and analysis.Besides,she also concludes the characteristics and value of the residences.Secondly,she discussed about the preservation and upgrading of the buildings by material analysis and field researches.Next,based on some domestic successes in this field,she concludes the principles and strategies to deal with the preservation and upgrading work.Last but not east,she has a further discussion on the feasibility of the strategies mentioned before by applying them to some cases.By doing this,the author tries to provide references and experience for the preservation and upgrading of traditional folk residences in Yancheng and other cities in northern Jiangsu Province.
