Building energy consumption accounts for more than one-third of total energy consumption, and the energy efficiency of buildings plays an important role in national energy strategies. How to achieve low energy consumption, innovative application of new energy and enhance living comfort through technical strategies has become an important issue in the field of architecture. At the same time, how to deal with the relationship between architecture and energy, environment, economy, society and other aspects has become the essence of the topic. The small-volume structure of buildings has long been playing a role of exploring the reform in contemporary architecture, indicating new forms of change and new changes in the relationship between architecture and society. An international competition to explore zero-energy technologies to improve energy efficiency and demonstrate future lifestyles-Solar Decathlon, which has been held for 15 times since 2002,has built more than 200 zero-energy solar homes, proving to rely on Renewable energy and passive technology enable homes that are both comfortable and energy efficient.Passive technology that does not rely on mechanical equipment, passively accepts or directly utilizes renewable energy is key to improving energy efficiency. Therefore, this paper mainly focuses on the passive strategy in solar decathlon entries, focusing on plan, building shape coefficient, insulation design of enclosure structure, sunshade design, passive solar heating and heat storage, natural ventilation and natural daylighting, etc.to analyze and summarize its design strategies and developmentOn the research methods, the previous competition entries were researched and case-organized,and analyzed and summarized by relevant historical and technical theories. At the same time, the influence of building shape coefficient, the heat transfer coefficient of the envelope structure and the natural ventilation on comfort zone, were explained by analyzing the measured data during some competitions. In addition, this paper conducts sustainability analysis and evaluation of passive design strategies from environmental, economic, and social factors. In the research,we found that by comprehensive application of passive design strategies, the SD competition entries improve indoor comfort.New changes emerge in the plan, facade and shape, and to some extent, the design principles of traditional passive solar houses have been broken. At the same time,low-energy of buildings resulting from by using passive design strategies and the use of renewable energy, reduce the impact of buildings to environment, shorten investment payback periods, and responds to the relationship between buildings and urban renewal. The passive design strategy and its sustainability in the Solar Decathlon entries have practical reference significance for the development of contemporary zero-energy buildings and green buildings.
