Our ancestors have always been walking in search of food,to move around,or to migrate. This is how humans have been designed to move;with our feet to walk or to run.Through time, humans developed in terms of capability and invented cars and other technologies that take us beyond our natural capacity. In doing so,we have created new issues namely pollution, car accidents, inequity and many others. In today's world, with a persistent increase in these issues,it is becoming more and more important for countries around the world to look for a solution. The answer has been to turn back to our body design, that is walking.Today cities are implementing these strategies and supplementing it with cycling. This is showing many benefits for the cities and is gaining more and more popularity as everyone wants to reap from these benefits.Such initiative is also proposed for the City of Port Louis in Mauritius. However, there have been many hurdles in terms of its implementation-nearly 15 years since the strategy was set,and still no significant improvement in this respect The main reason is the absence of an adequate tool of enforcement. This thesis looks into this issue by devising a way to measure the walkability of the city in a mathematical method that gives an exact value. It is a fully data-oriented method that will give exact value at specific places within the city.It can therefore be used as a tool to assess the existing situation and for future development purpose. It will also be accompanied by recommendations that take into consideration the realities of Mauritius.
