The grotto temple was originally a form of Buddhist architecture in India.Xiangtang Mountain Grottoes are located in Gushan,Fengfeng District of Handan city.They were excavated in the late Northern Wei Dynasty and the early Northern Qi Dynasty.The existing relics are huge in scale,architectural forms and stone carvings are basically intact,reflecting the early architectural art and religious culture characteristics of Buddhism,having great scientific and artistic value.Grotto culture was introduced from the western regions of China and reached its peak in the Southern and Northern Dynasties.The Grottoes in Xiangtang Mountain continued to develop thereafter,both in content and technique,forming unique architectural styles such as pagoda temple grottoes,overhanging bowl mound and attic style,and manifested the trend of combining with secular architecture.Through site investigations,the research of related literature and the comparative analysis of the same kind of constructions,this topic analyzes the the site selection,layout,architectural form,spatial structure,sculpture decoration and development process of Xiangtang Mountain Grottoes Temple,in order to summarize the unique characteristics of Xiangtang Mountain Grottoes from the architectural point of view,and classify the forms and components of grotto buildings,and provide important reference materials for the research of grottoes in the Northern Qi Dynasty and the development of modern architectural design.
