From Literature To Architecture

Although literature and architecture are different artistic forms,they are closely related.Many literary works depict architecture,such as Victor Hugo's Notre Dame de Paris and Yukio Miyama's Golden Pavilion Temple.The architectural space with words as the carrier can arouse readers'emotion,imagination and resonance more than the real architectural space because of its strong connection with history,characters,stories,emotions and atmosphere.Concerning literary works in architectural research has always been a tradition of Western Architecture.Brunelleschi has studied Dante's Divine Comedy in depth,and the study from literature to architecture has been favored by many avant-garde architects,such as Archizoom and John Hejduk.At the same time,in architectural education,Cranbrook Academy of Art and Cooper Union Architecture College often have design training based on literary texts.Generally speaking,most of the western modern discussions on 'From Literature to Architecture'are based on philosophical thinking or with some architectural spatial metaphor.There is a natural intersection between them and architecture.However,few studies on this topic in China.In this paper,the theme of'From Literature to Architecture'is explored with a literary text of'Fuyun Tower' in the Chinese classical novel 'Twelve Tower s' written by Li Yu.Based on the in-depth analysis of literary texts,some unique structures are sorted out,which are re-expressed in architectural design language.This paper consists of four parts.First part,the exploration from literature to architecture was analyzed and sorted out.I sorted out three categories:reductive design,abstract design and design teaching exploration.Second part,I analysis 'Fuyun Tower',from four aspects:historical background,narrative structure,role image and character relationship.Then extracted the unique structure of multiple forms of control.In the third part,buildings in "Fuyun Tower" is redesigned by textual research.By describing and researching the paintings,poems and documents,I restored the important places where the story happened:Weizhai,Yuzhai,Fuyun Tower's spatial relationship.The fourth part,based on the analysis of the second part,I made two design works "Nenghong Theater"and "Game Playground of Destiny".I hope that this study can trigger more thinking on the theme from literature to architecture,and provide some new possibilities for the relationship between architecture and literature.
