Urban Renewal Of Huangpen Village

This thesis is under the background of Rural Urbanization.Traditional village is not only a kind of spatial structure and material form,but also the carrier of traditional culture and lifestyle.Traditional village reflects the harmonious relationship between human and nature.The close neighborhood and abundant public activities also demonstrate an ideal lifestyle.The ultimate goal of this thesis tries is to find a practical method in order to achieve rural urbanization while preserving the cultural and material treasure of traditional villages.Suburb traditional villages near the city center are selected as the research object.Because of the existence of nearby city,these villages are faced with the problem of spatial compression as well as population and energy loss.This thesis explores a renewal method that fits this kind of traditional villages,the ones locate near the city center.The project of urban renewal of Huangpen Village is introduced as an example to demonstrate the contents of this renewal method.A settlement renewal method aimed at livable countryside is promoted based on relative theories and practices as well as present situation of Chinese suburb villages.The term “livable” requires the promotion of infrastructure and physical environment,while the term “countryside” requires the maintenance of the characteristics of traditional rural countryside.The settlement renewal method aimed at livable countryside contains four basic strategies,namely spot activation,community creation,infrastructure promotion and environment promotion.Spot activation means exploring cultural and natural resources within the villages in order to attract more people from both within and without the village,which takes action at the beginning of the renewal.Spot activation includes spot selection,spot programming,and circulation organization.Community creation,which shares the perspective of architects and planners,researches upon the spatial requirements and implementation of creating a lively neighborhood,and it includes unit formation,unit procession,and public space shaping.Infrastructure promotion focuses on the metabolism of the village,aiming at promoting the traffic and service condition of the village.Infrastructure promotion includes traffic reorganization,service functions insertion,and housing renovation.Environment promotion concentrates on the coziness and happiness of living,including green space adjusting and style coordination.The project of urban renewal of Huangpen Village is introduced to demonstrate the renewal method described before.Located in Lanxi City,Zhejiang Province,Huangpen Village possesses the settlement resources of traditional villages as well as problems brought by the process of urbanization.The renewal method aimed at livable countryside was applied during the process of this project.Thus,the feasibility and effectiveness of the method was tested,and the interrelationship of its contents was further explored.
