The materials used in the filling project can be crushed stone materials,sandy materials,sticky soil materials and other wastes that can be used as filler.The backfilling quality of the filling project is related to the material characteristics of the backfill,the degree of mechanical compaction and the environment conditions of the construction site.The more dense the backfilling material is,the more the number of machines compacted,the higher the compaction efficiency,the better the quality of the construction compaction.With the continuous development of new technology and new process,the testing method based on backfilling compaction quality has been constantly updated and replaced,from the initial first generation of basic physical testing methods to the current third generation of strength detection methods.It shows the continuous innovation of detection technology,also indicates that the development of future detection technology will be more and more scientific and more systematic.In this paper,the falling ball rock and soil mechanics characteristic tester(referred to as falling ball tester)is taken as the contrast object,and it is compared with the traditional density test method.Firstly,the research background and progress of the construction quality are described,and the testing methods and testing indexes of the former filling engineering are summarized.Secondly,the basic principle of the test technology of falling ball rock and soil mechanics and the way of using the instrument and the matters needing attention are elaborated,and the principle and the control index and the test method of the traditional density detection method are studied and analyzed.Lastly,under the compaction of different rock and soil materials,the field testing of the measuring instrument of the rock and soil mechanics characteristics and the traditional density testing of the original soil are carried out respectively.Tidy up the test results and analyze the correlation and difference of the test index.Then,the uniformity of the test site was compared and the regularity was summarized.The test results show that the technical indexes of the ball drop test and the traditional density test indexes have good correlation with the different filling materials.Falling ball detection can well reflect the effect of rolling,especially for some phenomena which are not easy to be reflected by density,such as rolling and lateral flow,etc,which can be clearly reflected.The correlation will rise,but it will not increase all the time,and the correlation will be worse for soft or particularly hard fill materials.Falling ball test technology is more convenient and efficient than traditional density test,and has less influence factor.It is easier to detect the traditional method which is not easy to test.Especially for hard rock material,falling ball detection technology is more suitable.The traditional density test will require high quality of test environment and laboratory personnel.Therefore,the test results may also have great errors,which can not accurately respond to the scene.In addition,the correlation fitting of this test index can be used as a reference for practical engineering.
