The area along the tongyang Canal in mid-Jiangsu province has a long history of human civilization and urban construction, the ancestors in mid-jiangsu rigion were “born to the sea”.The original settlements were distributed along the coastline. The ocean is an important economic resource with abundant products. The production of sea salt has a long history, the development of salt industry has the most profound impact on the local economy. At the same time, the water network in Suzhong is densely populated.Water provides conditions for traffic and defense in the area.Ancient people form a complex canal transportation network in tandem with natural water systems.Historically, the mid-Jiangsu region has been developed and prospered due to its convenient water transportation and advanced salt industry. As a link between towns, the Tongyang Canal connects the towns along the river. The interaction between the town and the canal is particularly close.Summing up the law of the evolution of towns and canals is a powerful supplement to the history of urban development in the region. As a tributary of the Grand Canal, the study of the Tongyang Canal is also Branches of the Grand Canal system. It fills the gaps in the research of the Grand Canal in local water systems and river basin towns. The canal has the Double attribute of nature and economy, affecting the spatial form of the town besides the water. This paper hopes to sum up the historical process of town development along the Tongyang Canal, and analyze the mechanism of the canal’s urban space on a macro and micro level. It will re-examine the Central and Eastern cities and towns from the perspectives of regional, development, and systems, and clarify the development context and discover space. The law provides a certain reference for the healthy and sustainable development of the town. The paper first sorts out the history of the development of towns and canals in the Central and Central Jiangsu, and analyzes the features of the evolution of urban networks in Central and Southern Jiangsu from the aspects of quantity, grade, scale, function, and distribution. Then, the extraction of salt transport was the first factor to analyze, from the four aspects of salt industry management, salt tax, salt merchants and salt people, canal water transport to elaborate the mechanism of the canal on the urban network structure. Finally,by analyzing the spatial patterns of case cities,we reveal the similarities and differences in the spatial construction of central cities,Yanyun Town and Yanchang Town, and analyze the close interaction between towns and water in the microscopic spatial form. The paper analyzes the historic towns along the Tongyang Canal from the historical, macroscopic, and microscopic levels, summarizes the influence factors of the towns, the influence of the industry on the towns, and the importance of the water system to the towns. And proposes to construct the urban culture corridor from the regional perspective.Development perspectives examine the urban space design.system perspective to construct the canal and the urban system. The hope is that the cities and towns in the region can achieve cultural heritage, rational allocation of resources, commonness and individuality, and organic integration of systems and parts.
