| China is an ancient civilization with long history and possesses hundreds of historic cities of different levels, sizes, shapes and current situations.Accompanied by the centralization of urban population and the development of modern motorized traffic, the traffic problems in big cities of China has become increasingly noticeable. There is a sharp contradiction within big cities of China between the protection of ancient city area and the traffic demand of modern cities. This paper analyzes the original traffic pattern of Chinese ancient cities in the feudal era,and the influence and impact by new modes of transportation on Chinese ancient cities in modern times.According to the location of ancient city area in the modern cities and the size of ancient city area, four different types of ancient city area in big cities of China are summarized and analyzed, and the status and function of each type of ancient city area in modern cities are discussed.Different types of ancient city area have different characteristics of urban pattern and urban traffic, which determines the characteristics of urban road network, urban public transportation,non-motorized traffic system and so on in ancient city area. This paper focuses on the interaction and mutual restriction between urban planning and traffic development in ancient city area, and discusses how to give consideration to historical and cultural protection in the process of traffic optimization, and how to reduce traffic demand and promote transportation experience in the process of urban renewal. The general principle of traffic development in ancient city area of big cities is proposed which exploited building a non-motorized urban traffic system and connecting closely with urban public transport system in order to form a green transport system. The coordination strategies of urban renewal and traffic optimization in ancient city area is explained. The application of new non-motorized modes of transportation such as shared bicycles and pedelecs in non-motorized urban traffic system is introduced.Traffic development patterns of ancient city area in China can be summarized into six different modes, and the main contradictions in the traffic system of ancient city area under each mode are studied.According to the characteristics of those six typical traffic development modes of ancient city area, possible solutions to traffic problems and strategies of specific optimization targets are proposed based on the current situations and the traffic development patterns of cities under each mode.Taking Nanning as an example, the process of selecting traffic optimization strategies and potential traffic planning scheme for specific ancient city area is shown, which combines theoretical analysis and empirical studies. The hub station design of Chaoyang Plaza public transportation transfer center and the planning scheme of underground walking system and air corridor system in ancient city area of Nanning is introduced. This paper can provide ideas and references for urban traffic planning projects and urban traffic research in urban planning projects of historic cities. |
