Form is the most intuitive expressional element in architectural creation.People often observe architectural form by vision to obtain the perception and grasp of the “form” of architecture and further feel the spirit and charm brought by such “form”.Therefore, the study of the generation of architectural form requires us to pay attention to the common quality of the exterior and the interior of architecture.Kengo Kuma,as a well-known contemporary Japanese architect, rethinks the traditional culture of Japan while accepting the western culture. He takes the locality into consideration and integrates tradition and localization into his project using various translation operation logic. This paper will discuss the specific generation of architecture of Kengo Kuma which is based on the translation operation which is the key to the transformation of such tradition and localization into the concrete form of architecture. This paper aims at the translation operation logic of Kengo Kuma's project and the research contents cover the concept of translation, the translation of “form” and “artistic conception”,and the implementation of such translation.First of all,the paper discuss the concept of architectural formal language and formal translation, putting forward important factors in translation such as “prototype” and “context” and dividing into two ways, literal translation and free translation, which correspond to the translation of “form” and “artistic conception”.Secondly, take a bottom-top view to analysis the project of Kengo Kuma and sum up his translation operation in form, interface and construct. Finally, from the perspective of top-down,the methods of translation are highly summarized as two strategies based on the material level and the place level.Influenced by the technology, materials even social culture, the translation of architectural form is not a mere imitation of the image, but an abstract process of thought change. The architectural practice of Kengo Kuma provides us with a kind of translation method that considering both form and artistic conception,as well as the selection of material and the construction of the place.
