Protective Reuse Of Industrial Heritage With Public Participation

Industrial buildings with suspended production activities have become an indispensable part in the urban fabric with the advent of the post-industrial age.It is urgent to comprehensively utilize these industrial buildings during urban renewal,thereby they can become an active part of urban public space.Relatively single mode is adopted for protection and reuse of industrial buildings in China at present,the development mode is unsustainable,etc.Emphasis on protection of material space rather than excavation of regional culture and history,continuation of local industrial tradition,understanding of the current social environment as well as respect and attention to individual needs during reuse is the main reason for these problems.Countries with long industrial traditions in Europe are exploring the mode of public participation at present.Ordinary people related to industrial heritage can participate in protective reuse of industrial heritage through the mode of public participation,thereby realizing the transformation from simply retaining the appearance and function replacement to reshaping diversified,community and whole-process places through multiple cooperation.Public participation includes bottom-up channels as a mode.The internal driving force of urban industrial development can be comprehended again from the public perspective,thereby continuing the industrial tradition,enhancing the sense of belonging and identity of contemporary people to the environment,building and city,and promoting healthy and sustainable development about protection and reuse of industrial buildings.The author participated in protective reuse process of Sheffield Portland Works,a typical case as a volunteer-a secondary industrial heritage protection building in Britain constructed since 1876 for deeply understanding specific strategies and realistic significance of the public participation mode.It was regarded as an example for strategy study on protective reuse of industrial heritage under public participation.Firstly,the application of protection and reuse of industrial heritage and public participation in architecture is respectively sorted through literature research in the paper,including relevant theoretical research and practical cases.Main modes and problems of industrial heritage reuse are analyzed on the basis.The principles of protective reuse of industrial heritages under public participation are summarized.It is proposed that place creation is the core difficulty thereof.Then,the protective reuse case of Sheffield Portland Works under public participation is analyzed in details from three aspects of form,activity and intention,thereby deeply exploring the activation and extension modes of Sheffield Portland Works under public participation,and analyzing specific mode and characteristics of public participation,the influence of public participation on material entity protection of Sheffield Portland Works buildings,events and activities of public participation in building space,and the value of public participation in industrial place intention reshaping.Finally,an evaluation system of industrial building reuse based on place creation and industrial building reuse design strategies based on public participation are proposed in the paper based on the above research.It is expected that public participation provides reference for protective reuse of industrial heritages in China,and it also provides inspiration for the establishment of public space in urban design from a broader perspective.
