In China, with the rapid development of ultra high voltage(UHV)alternating current(AC)transmission project, the voltage level of transmission lines rised, and the strength of power frequency electric field(PFEF)in the vicinity of transmission lines also rised.Besides, more and more transmission lines were built in populous areas.Accordingly, more and more people were exposed to PFEF generated by transmission lines, thus potential health effects from PFEF have aroused public concern. In order to study the effects of PFEF on hematology and functions of liver and kidney in receptors,Institute of Cancer Research(ICR)mice, whose peripheral blood is stable, were exposed to 35kV/m PFEF and 40kV/m PFEF,respectively. In these two experiments, the haematological indicators of blood routine test(including white blood cell count, white blood cell classification, red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, blood platelet count),liver function test(including alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, total protein, albumin, globulin, the ratio of albumin and globulin),kidney function test(including unea nitrogen, creatinine),blood glucose, blood lipid(including triglyceride, total cholesterol),and oxidative stress indicators of malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, glutathione S-transferase and glutathione peroxidase were tested after 7d,14d,21d,35d,49d under 35kV/m PFEF exposure and after 7d,21d,35d under 40kV/m PFEF exposure, respectively.Besides, the pathological morphology and cell ultrastructure of liver and kidney were observed after 25d,52d under 35kV/m PFEF exposure and 40d under 40kV/m PFEF exposure. The main conclusions were as follows:The total cholesterol level in serum siginificantly increased after exposure of 21d,while localized fatty degeneration occurred in liver after 35kV/m PFEF exposure of 25d.However,these two indicators returned to normal after further exposure. These indicated that the influence of 35kV/m PFEF on lipid metabolism of liver was reversible and it could be recovered by adaptation. The triglyceride and the total cholesterol in serum increased significantly, while fatty liver appeared after exposure of 40kV/m PFEF.It indicated that 40kV/m PFEF could cause damage of liver function, especially lipid metabolism. In addition, alanine aminotransferase(ALT)activity in serum increased after exposure of 40kV/m PFEF.It indicated that the permeability of cells in liver was impaired.Analysis indicated that mechanism of impaired liver function might be the destruction of redox balance. The influence of PFEF on liver had a strength-effect relationship. The levels of unea nitrogen and creatinine in serum could increase after short-term exposure of PFEF,but these two indicators could return to normal after further exposure. These indicated that PFEF had influences on kidney, especially functions of glomerular filtration, but the influence was reversible.Analsis of results indicated that the reason why the effects of PFEF on liver and kidney were different might be that liver had more mitochondia than kidney. And electric field could make mitochondrial membrane potential rise, which caused more oxygen(O2)to be oxidized to superoxide anion radical(O2-·).Thus,the O2-·concentration of liver was higher than in kidney. The redox balance in hepatic cells was more likely to be disordered, causing damage of liver.
