In order to meet the need of seismic resilient structure, the high-strength steel frame structure with fuses and dampers is proposed to reduce damage and economic loss of building structures under the rare earthquake.Theories, tests, and simulations were used to study the the damage-control mechanism and seismic performance of the proposed structural system. The major efforts of this study are as follows:(1)The research status and damage-control concepts of high-strength steel structures were summarized. The high-strength steel frame structure system was proposed by making full use of the advantages brought by the fuses and dampers. The detailed configurations and design methods of the proposed fuses and dampers were introduced. The seismic-design theory and working principle of the proposed structure was analyzed.(2)The cyclic test of five sub-structure frame specimens, with different steel materials, fuses and dampers, was carried out to investigate the mechanical behavior of the high-strength steel frame structure with fuses and dampers. The observed experimental phenomena, initial stiffness, ultimate bearing capacity, skeleton curve, energy dissipation capacity and detailed strain data were examined. It is shown that the proposed structural system has good damage-control effects and seismic performance, and can achieve the objectives to achieve seismic resilient structures.(3)The double-bar finite element model was proposed for the damper. The structural model of the high-strength steel frame specimen with fuses and dampers was established using MSC.Marc software and verified by the test results and phenomena of the speciemens. The proposed model can be extened to more extensive analyses on the overall behavior of the new structural system.(4)The finite element models of ordinary steel frame,high-strength steel frame,high-strength steel frame with fuses, and high-strength steel frames with both the fuses and dampers were constructed.Various analyses, including the modal analysis,Pushover analysis, and elasto-plastic time history analysis were conducted for each of the above structures. The damage evolution and distribution in the structure were investigated, and the force and deformation of structure under either frequent earthquake or rare earthquake are presented. An elastic design method for the major earthquake was developed.
