Historical and cultural city in China remains rich and has its own characteristics.Parts of the traditional blocks preserve high integrity and considerable scale. The space of courtyard is more suitable for the habitants.Meanwhile,it possesses favourable potential for conservation and renewable designs on location relationship and city value,so as to achieve the historical and cultural development, and achieve the purpose of the city's business card construction. That shows exactly the precious value of historical architecture. However, many current historical block transformation does not really respect local culture, restore historical origins, and display local characteristics in the construction of the economic benefits, which resulting in a severe destruction on the lanes scale of these blocks, the architectural form, the yard space, and the landscape layout. As a result, the historical features of a particular city were lost, which eventually led to the “sameness” of diffrent cities. Therefore, through in-depth research, professional analysis and accurate positioning,as well as analysis and planning on the various constituent elements of a historical block, adoption targeted on transformation strategiesis, and the provision of the functional updates accroding to culture value of the city, are particularly important.Ding Street of Hanzhong is located in the east of the core area of the city.It is a well-preserved traditional commercial street with Ming and Qing style. There are many traditional combined courtyard dwellings on both sides--These dwellings are the most traditional living space in Ding Street district,at the same time,it is also a complete relic of Hanzhong's old city history. This paper takes the traditional courtyard space form of the Ding Street in Hanzhong City as the research subject, starts with the factors that influence the natural environment, the humanistic environment and the historical context formed in the traditional courtyard space in the old city, through field visits and investigations, the morphological characteristics of the traditional courtyard space in this block are analyzed in detail.According to the results of the research and analysis, the design scheme of the future reform was put forward for the representative courtyard. This paper is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction, which clarifies the background, basis and significance of the research. It also summarizes the research status at home and abroad,as well the relevant theoretical and practical results, which is aimed at providing guidance for the research,in the end of this part, the content, methods and framework of the study are proposed; The second part is about the theoretical review and case study,it specifically explains the related theories involved in this paper, and selects the typical cases related to the research object of this article; The third part is the investigation of the status of the research object, that is,the Ding Street. The overall characteristics of Hanzhong city,as well as the basic profile, constituent elements and courtyard layout characteristics of the Dingjie District were investigated and summarized respectively. Finally, the existing problems are analyzed and presented; The fourth part is the core of this thesis, which is the analysis of the spatial pattern of courtyards in Ding Street district. It starts with the various aspects of the courtyard, such as plane, space, formation, scale and proportion. At the same time, qualitative and quantitative methods are used to describe the spatial morphological characteristics of the courtyard; In the fifth part, starting with the overall planning of the future development direction of the city(Hanzhong City)in which the Ding Street is located, and then, from macroscopic to microscopic perspective, the transformation plan for the typical courtyard space in the area was proposed and presented through different types and views,in order to provide constructive suggestions for the protection of traditional residential courtyards.
