A Research On The Public Art Design In The Metro Public Space Based On The Regional Culture

The process of urbanization has made the subway an indispensable and important means of transportation.Meanwhile,it has also caused many unique physical and non-material cultures in the city to be obliterated,leading to a crisis of cultural convergence.For this reason,this paper proposes the design concept of “inheriting culture and manifesting regional characteristics for Wuhan Metro” and carries out a design practice on Panlongcheng Subway Station.The dissertation is divided into four parts:The first part discusses the theoretical knowledge of public art design,subway space and regional culture,analyzes the necessity of integrating regional culture into the public art design in subway space,and summarizes common expression forms,vehicles,and language styles.The second part analyzes the characteristic subway stations at home and abroad,and finds that these subway stations mostly use various forms of expression to integrate urban features,humanity history and landscapes into public art design,thus achieving an organic combination of function and art.The third part summarizes the eight regional cultures of Wuhan,and obtains a general impression on Wuhan Metro Stations’ cultural construction through questionnaires.A field study is conducted,too,and it is found that most of characteristic stations in Wuhan use murals,sculptures and modern decoration to express the rich connotations of the four major themes,which are natural and cultural landscapes,humanistic customs,cultural heritage and urban and social development,and it is also found that some stations are overly designed in the pursuit of authenticity in describing historical events,some are overly decorated due to the use of complex materials,while some others are monotonously designed,and thus lack of novelty in the use of the design language.The fourth part,based on the analysis of the previous chapters,proposes a design concept and a four-step design approach,which is positioning,analysis,design,andexpression;elements from the Jing-Chu culture,the Panlong culture,the Water Culture,the Bronze culture and the Mulan culture are extracted through abstraction,deconstruction reorganization,and superposition,and the design practice is carried out in terms of shapes,colors,and materials in an innovative way.This article aims at providing a design idea and a design method for the construction of metro space of cultural characteristics in the future using public art.
